Whether you’re celebrating alone, with your partner, family, or friends, these Valentine’s Day dinner ideas will make your heart skip a beat. While romantic dinner dates are also okay, I’d rather spend Valentine’s Day at home and cook for my loved ones.

When was Valentine's Day first sent?

Valentine’s Day cards have been around since at least the 15th century —the first was rumored to have been sent by a duke, held in the Tower of London, to his wife.

Is it fashionable to sneer on Valentine's Day?

Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images. It’s become fashionable to sneer at Valentine’s Day and to mock those who celebrate it. So fashionable, in fact, that in 2011 Torie Bosch felt compelled to defend the day of romance. In honor of the holiday, the article is reprinted below.

Is Valentine's Day a pagan holiday?

The holiday itself dates back many centuries before then; it is apparently another pagan holiday that Christians attempted to co-opt, by transforming the Roman fertility celebration Lupercalia into St. Valentine’s Day.

2. Spending time with your S.O

February brings out the romantics in all of us; boyfriends, girlfriends, and everybody in a relationship for that matter always seem adorable, whether it be the photos or the gift giving. A friend of mine had said she was craving Mac & Cheese, and her boyfriend brought her a bouquet of roses and a box of Kraft.

3. It gives you the perfect excuse to watch a Romantic Comedy

Rom coms' are great, but when it comes time for movie night with my squad, they usually tend to opt for a film with less of a cheesy theme to it; Valentines' Day gives me the opportunity to bust out the movies specifically for hopeless romantics, such as myself!

4. Putting a Big Red Bow on your dog

If you have a dog, cat, or a lovable pet you can dress up, it's always great to dress them up, and make sure they look as festive as you feel!

5. Giving bunches of cards to everyone

Handmade, or store-bought, it is the thought that counts. Giving Valentines' Day cards is almost just as good as getting them! My favorite card I ever got was a super cheesy one with quotes all over it. Even the dry, funny ones are great, too; make sure you give at least one card to someone you care about!

6. Two Words. Ben and Jerry's

I know I already put candy on the list, but ice cream is technically a completely separate food group! If you happen to be single, its always okay to buy a pint of a Ben and Jerry's (pair with #3) and indulge while curling up on the couch. I'll confess: I've been here once or twice. Yeah.

7. Ogling all the hot movie stars

OK, this may or may not be accurate for you, but seriously, um, Zac Efron: double swoon!

THE GOOD

Sometime’s this day provides the perfect opportunity for self-love, romance and laughs.

THE BAD

These walk the line between being quite funny but in a “with hindsight” kind of way.

1. Prime Rib

If you and your partner are mad about meat, then prime rib has to be your entree.

2. Easy Crab Cakes

When I say these crab cakes are easy to make, I mean embarrassingly easy. I once thought they required a lot of work, but boy was I wrong.

3. Filet Mignon

If your goal is to impress your date, look no further than filet mignon. Its fancy-sounding name alone already leaves a mark.

4. Lobster Bisque

Chunks of sweet and buttery lobster tails swim in a rich and creamy broth. I think I’m in love.

5. Marry Me Chicken

Planning to pop the question this Valentine’s Day? I’m sure your sweetheart will say yes, but Marry Me Chicken will seal the deal.

6. Chicken Parmesan

If you think you’ve had the best chicken parmesan yet, wait until you try this one.

7. Lobster Mac and Cheese

Sure, mac and cheese is a typical, budget-friendly weekday dish. But it only takes one simple addition to make it fancy.
