Are DSSV shocks rebuildable?

As far as i know the dssv shocks are suppose to be rebuildable like dirt bike ones (fox shocks too). They are not throw aways like normal cars. Find a good off road shop or suspension place and they will probably do them. Should only need seals, new oil, and another nitrogen gas charge.

What does DSSV mean on a Camaro?

How do DSSV dampers work?

DSSV dampers push their fluids through laser-etched openings in spool valves inside the damper that open and close as a sleeve slides up and down around them. Sleeve slides down, orifices open. Sleeve slides up, orifices close.

What are Multi Matic shocks?

Multimatic moved the spool valves that control on-road ride into a chamber in the middle of the damper and placed a third spool valve on the shaft in the main body that handles extreme compression events. What it created is a bypass shock that doesn't compromise on-road handling for off-road comfort.

What shocks does the Colorado ZR2 have?

The Chevrolet Performance ZR2 Front Jounce Shock System, designed specifically for 2017+ Colorado ZR2 models is a nitrogen charged hydraulic secondary suspension bump shock intended for off-road use.

Are ZR2 shocks adjustable?

The short answer is the ZR2's shock absorbers, which are highly sophisticated yet delightfully simple — and low tech only if your definition of tech requires electricity, because unlike any other suspensions with the versatility of the ZR2's, these shock absorbers aren't computer controlled or even remotely adjustable.

Who makes DSSV shocks?

General Motors DSSV Technology. Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSV) is a chassis suspension technology that delivers high levels of suspension damping performance. It is used on various ultra high-performance GM vehicles, including the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, Camaro ZL1 1LE, and Colorado ZR2.

What kind of suspension does a Chevy Colorado have?

All Colorado models, both 2WD and 4WD, feature a coil-over-shock independent front suspension design.

What does ZR2 stand for?

Effectively, the ZR2 simply means that it's a truck built to handle the rigors of off-roading. For the Silverado, the ZR2 package translates to a 6.2-liter-powered Silverado that sits on a set of 33-inch off-road tires.

What's the difference between ZR2 and Z71?

The ZR2 trim is only available in 4WD configuration, whereas the Z71 has a 2WD option. The Z71 also offers a long box option with the crew cab configuration, while the ZR2 only has a short box option with the crew cab.

Does the ZR2 have independent suspension?

The ZR2 uses an independent front suspension setup and a solid rear axle in the rear with leaf springs. The rear axle design requires the shocks to be mounted more inboard and the shock mounts do hang down a bit.

Is the Colorado ZR2 good off-road?

It starts at $45,395 and is a special off-road trim that includes suspension adjustments and a rugged exterior that make the 2022 Colorado ZR2 a great pickup for off-roading. The Chevy Colorado ZR2 comes with both an extended cab and a crew-cab short bed configurations. You can also choose either a V6 or diesel engine.

How much suspension travel does a ZR2 have?

The Silverado offers 9 inches of suspension travel up front and 10 inches of travel out back. However, this isn't a full-blown Ford F-150 Raptor competitor. The Silverado ZR2 only has a bit more than 9 inches of suspension travel in the front and a little over 10 inches in the rear.

Where did DSSV come from?

Like all good technology, DSSV came from racing. It was pioneered in Champ Car in 2002, where it won five championships. It made its way to F1 where it was present on the season winners in the 2010-2013 FIA World Constructors’ Championships with Red Bull Racing. Multimatic dampers were on 25 of the 60 entries at Le Mans last year, including three of the four class winners. It’s on everything from DTM to Mazda MX-5 cars. In street cars, it’s on the Aston Martin One-77 and Mercedes AMG GT.

How does shock fluid move?

As the fluid inside the shock is pushed up or down by the plunger, the resulting force causes the disc (s) to bend, or deflect, which allows the fluid to move through the tube and the wheel to go up and down in a controlled fashion. There is usually more than one disc involved.

Can DSSV dampers be tuned?

If you want your damper to absorb tiny bumps but stiffen up for larger bumps, or vice versa, you change the size and shape of the openings, or orifices. DSSV damping is highly predictable and easily tuneable, or at least easier than other damper technology like deflected discs. Once the setup has been tuned, the damper is not adjustable like magnetorheological or electronic systems.

The Multimatic DSSV

Multimatic is a privately held corporation based out of Ontario, Canada. The company provides many different parts to several of the OEs, including control arms for GM pickups, the tailgate step for Ford, and the tailgate damper assembly for Nissan and Toyota.

Why Spool Valves

In Multimatic’s DSSV dampers, spool valves replace the traditional piston and shims. Each spool valve has a spring-loaded valve that opens and closes at a variable rate depending on the speed of the damper’s shaft.

How Well Do They Work?

We had the opportunity to take a very brief ride in the new Colorado ZR2 on a man-made track in the middle of downtown Los Angeles. Over the years, we’ve driven a multitude of vehicles with both internal- and external-bypass shocks. We’ve got to say, even with the limited wheel travel of the ZR2, the DSSV dampers work phenomenally well.

What is a DSSV?

In 2010, Multimatic applied for a patent on an innovative suspension damper. Code named DSSV, for Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve , this design initially proved its merit by helping Newman-Haas Racing win seven of the 19 races and the driver’s championship in the 2002 CART series. DSSV hardware became mandatory equipment in five other major racing series between 2006 and 2015. Red Bull Racing used them to win four consecutive Formula 1 titles (2010–2013) and nearly half of this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours competitors swear by DSSV dampers.

What is DSSV damper?

Multimatic’s DSSV dampers retain basic components such as a sealed tube filled with hydraulic oil and a piston that moves within that tube in sync with suspension motion. The difference is that the thin discs are replaced with a pair of hollow cylindrical sleeves nested concentrically within each other and held apart by a coil spring. Suspension motion forces damper oil inside the sleeve cavity. When that internal pressure is sufficient to overcome the spring force, one sleeve moves slightly with respect to the other, uncovering apertures, which allow oil to move to the opposite side of the piston. One sleeve valve regulates compression damping; another controls rebound damping.

How does DSSV help the ZR2?

Other aims were to reduce the peak vertical movement of the ZR2’s center of gravity by 40 percent and the driver’s hip upward displacement by 50 percent with damper tuning. Combining DSSV with PSD lowered the peak vertical force at the front tires by an impressive 35 percent while traversing a challenging “whoops” road profile at General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground.

How do dampers work?

Conventional dampers use multiple thin discs covering ports in the piston moving up and down within a tube containing hydraulic oil to generate the forces that control body and wheel motion. The flexibility tuned into these discs—and the size and shape of the ports they cover— determines how fluid flows between the chambers above and below the piston. The greater the flow restriction, the higher the damping force.

Does Multimatic sell DSSV dampers?

Unfortunately, Multimatic has no plans to sell D SSV dampers in the aftermarket except for replacement parts engineered for the Camaro Z/28. They’ll work on any sixth-generation Camaro, so anyone owning a 2016 or newer Chevrolet pony car can upgrade to at least partial Z/28 specs through GM’s service parts organization.
