Little Gems

Romaine varieties grow a long head of sturdy leaves with a firm rib down the center, and are quite popular in the United States. This is the variety of lettuce used in the popular Caesar salad. They are fairly easy to grow and tolerate some heat. Under good growing conditions, these varieties can be one of the fastest growing crops.

Basics

Lettuce will thrive in mild weather with consistent moisture. To extend the sowing season into hot weather, sow in light shade or erect a canopy of loosely woven shade cloth over the bed.

1. Ensure that the soil is warm

Use a soil thermometer to check the soil temperature. For optimal germination, the soil temperature should be between 40 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, to 6 inches in depth.

3. Prepare the soil

Till the soil until it is loose to a depth of 6 inches. Dig in a 3-inch layer of compost, using a shovel or gardening fork to ensure it’s mixed thoroughly into the top 6 inches of soil. Rake the bed until it is smooth.

4. Add fertilizer to the soil

Add nitrogen fertilizer to the soil at the rate recommended on the fertilizer label. Organic sources of nitrogen include alfalfa meal, kelp meal and cottonseed meal. Mix the fertilizer into the top 3 inches of soil.

5. Sow the seeds

Sow the Little Gem seeds 1/2 inch deep, 1 inche apart, in rows spaced 16 inches apart. (You'll later thin them to 12 inches apart.) Don’t pack the soil over the seeds, just cover them lightly, recommends Thomas & Morgan Seeds.

6. Water appropriately

Water the planting bed to 3 inches in depth. The best methods are drip irrigation or using a hose attachment with a fine mist setting. The key is to not wash the seeds away when you water. Keep the soil moist at all times. Little Gem lettuce germinates within two to five days after planting the seeds.

7. Thin the seedlings

Thin the Little Gem seedlings when they have their third set of leaves. They should be placed from 8 to 12 inches apart. Continue to water the seedlings, ensuring that the soil remains moist.

8. Fertilize regularly

Fertilize the seedlings after thinning with a soluble nitrogen fertilizer, such as the one you used before planting. Apply the fertilizer by digging a 2-inch-deep trench, 2 inches away from the row. Cover the fertilizer with soil and water to a depth of 6 inches.
