Introduction
Soil microbes comprise a large portion of the genetic diversity on Earth and are critical to the maintenance of plant diversity and a large number of essential ecosystem processes [ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ]. Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has climbed by three-to-five-fold over the course of the 20th century [ 7 ].
Materials and methods
We searched peer-reviewed journal articles published which evaluated the response of soil microbial characteristics to N addition in terrestrial ecosystems using the Web of Science and Google Scholar.
Results and discussion
As expected, we found strong negative effects of N addition on soil microbial biomass. Total microbial biomass, bacterial biomass, and fungal biomass decreased on average by 13.2% (95% CI, 5.9–20.4%, P = 0.002), 16.6% (10.1–23.0%, P < 0.001), and 19.2% (9.1–29.3%, P = 0.002), respectively (Fig. 1 ).
