Palms do best with root zones that extend at least 4 feet from the trunk, so you should place your drip irrigation hose in a 4-foot diameter and mulch to this line for best results, according to the University of Arizona. At a minimum, place mulch 3 feet out from the trunk.
Precautionary Measures
When applying mulch to your palm, keep it at least 6 inches from the base of the trunk. Mulches trap moisture and may therefore cause rot if they are continuously in contact with the trunk. Some mulch types -- especially straw and loose leaves -- can also harbor rodents.
