The cause of lee helm is the center of pressure exerted by the wind on the sails falls too far forward of the center of resistance of the hull—the natural point at which the hull tries to pivot. This tends to push the bow of the boat away from the wind. This can be due to a poor design, for example with the mast too far forward.

lee helm

I've got lee helm and have tried it all, Mast raked a ridiculous amount only reduced it a little. Sail trim doesn't really effect it. I point 5-8 degrees less than I should. 18 hours ago  · Your boat has a fairly high profile, with a reefed main the windage and chop could not be overcome at those wind speeds and so you had lee helm. Remember in a masthead rig the jib provides most of the driving force, not the main. So with main only and reffed you could not drive through the chop AND the windage forward.

10 hours ago Lee helm is when you push the tiller to lee (downwind) in order to keep the boat going in a straight line. We’ve probably all felt this slight pressure required on the tiller when underway. If you’re just learning to sail, remember next time you’re out to feel for this on the wheel. Your boat can be tuned to give weather helm or lee helm.
