Build an Outdoor Pizza Oven

If you love making pizza, a wood-fired pizza oven may be for you. Pizza ovens cook in a way that stoves or grills can’t. Either as part of an outdoor kitchen or a stand-alone oven, a pizza oven is great for entertaining.

Choose a Location for Your Pizza Oven

Deciding where to build your pizza oven is an important step in the process. Your backyard configuration, proximity to other structures, open air or under a pavilion are all factors that you need to consider.

Design and Measure

Once you've selected a location for your pizza oven, it's time to determine the design. There are many ways to make a pizza oven with different shapes and sizes, and materials from clay to concrete to brick. It really will depend on your location, preference and DIY skill level.

Build the Base

Now it’s time to get the base ready. The base for this design is 3 feet by 3 feet to accommodate a 36-inch oven. If you decide to go larger or smaller with your oven, the base will be the same size (for example: 4 feet by 4 feet to accommodate a 48-inch oven, 2 feet by 2 feet to accommodate a 24-inch oven, etc.).

Cap the Base

Once the base courses are complete, the next step is to set the capstone that the oven will be built on.

Lay the Bricks

Now that the base and capstone are in place, it's time to start on the oven.

Oven Dome Support

Before you can lay the bricks in a dome shape, you'll need to first create a mold or dome support. This will be a temporary structure that you’ll remove once the oven is completed. When cutting lumber, wear appropriate safety gear such as eye protection, a respirator/dust mask and hearing protection.
