Can you remove pesticides from potatoes?

Washing with water and/or other solutions as well as the cooking process (blanching and frying) helped to eliminate most of the pesticide residues from the potato tubers.

Imidacloprid

Pesticides containing imidacloprid are approved for use in the home garden. Pesticides formulated with this chemical work on green peach aphids and potato aphids, which feed on the foliage and spread diseases, such as potato leafroll virus, which can stunt growth and lower potato production.

Carbaryl

Also effective against flea beetle larvae, pesticides made with carbaryl may be used to control the black cutworm and the variegated cutworm. Carbaryl, also called Sevin, is moderately toxic to people and other mammals, and poses a moderate toxicity risk to groundwater from runoff.

Dinotefuran

Posing less danger to fish and other aquatic wildlife than carbaryl or imidacloprid, pesticides formulated with dinotefuran are used to treat flea beetle and silverleaf whitefly infestations. Silverleaf whiteflies feed on leaves, causing yellowing and curling. They are a particular problem for winter potato harvests in the San Joaquin Valley.

Abamectin

Used during the growing season, pesticides formulated with Abamectin to control potato psyllids have a high toxicity rating for its effects on humans, and other mammals, fish and other aquatic wildlife, and kills beneficial insects, such as predatory mites and parasites.

Spinosad

A less toxic choice than Abamectin for controlling potato psyllids during the growing season, pesticides made with spinosad produce low toxicity ratings for humans and other mammals and beneficial insects. The products are less likely to produce toxicity in groundwater due to runoff.

Cyfluthrin

Cyfluthrin pesticides pose only a slight toxicity risk to humans and mammals, but are highly toxic to fish and aquatic wildlife due to runoff, and is highly toxic to beneficial insects and honeybees. Pesticides made with cyfluthrin are used to treat potato tuberworm infestations.

Horticultural Oils and Soaps

Some insects, such as spider mites, whiteflies and aphids, may be smothered and killed with a spray of horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps. These products only kill the insects on the plant at the time of spraying, and generally are less toxic than other products.

Potato blight is a fungus

Late potato blight is caused by the Phytophthora Infestans fungus which affects not only potatoes, but also other nightshade plants such as tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. If left untreated, it can decimate the plant population and contaminate the soil for future plantings.

When does potato blight occur

Blight develops when the weather is warm and humid for extended periods. The spores travel through the air or by water.

How does potato blight spread

Wind carries the fungal spores from plant to plant and water can wash the spores into the soil, infecting the young tubers.

How much damage will blight cause

Once infected by late blight, an entire crop can be destroyed within a week. The fungus can even spread among harvested crops that are stored in the same bin or bag.

What are the symptoms of potato blight?

One of the first signs of blight affects the leaves; you will notice brown freckling or lesions on the leaves of the potato plant.

How to prevent potato blight

The best way to prevent potato blight is to choose a blight-resistant variety and use certified seed potatoes from a reputable source.

Common Potato Pests

Most of the insects in your garden do no harm, and some are actively beneficial, but a few can seriously damage your crop.

Neem Oil Spray

Neem oil is one of the most widely useful natural insecticides. It's pressed from seeds of the tropical neem tree ( Azadirachta indica ), and it's effective against Colorado potato beetles, leafhoppers, aphids and many other pests.

Spinosad-Based Spray

Spinosad is a natural insecticide derived from a soil bacterium, Saccharopolyspora spinosa. It's notable for low toxicity to humans and wildlife, though it's dangerous to bees while it's wet. Like neem oil, you'll want to apply it when pollinators aren't active.

DIY Insecticidal Soap Spray

Soaps have a well-demonstrated ability to kill insects and larvae, especially the soft-bodied ones. Commercial insecticidal soaps are specially formulated for that purpose, but any pure soap — no moisturizers or fragrances and not a detergent (like most dish soaps) — will work.

Tips and Alternative Controls

Mixing up a batch of a natural insecticide is only one part of the main goal, which is to have a pest-free potato patch with minimal impact on the environment. These tips and alternative controls can help get you the rest of the way:
