What are energy consumers?

Energy consumers are related to MBR-load consumers which are based on permeate production. This includes permeate pumps and aeration for the filtration unit which drives membrane cross-flow. Non-MBR load-related consumers belong to the biological process. Specifically, blower/mixer for the denitrification section, aeration for the nitrification and the feed pump providing the wastewater for further treatment (Codianne, 2015 ). Much about MBR pilot plants and their energy consumption can be found in the literature ( Krzeminski et al., 2017 ). Fig. 3 (left) highlights the main energy consumers and their percentage amount related to the total energy consumption. The information includes average values summarized from different sources ( Pellegrin and Kinnear, 2012; Krzeminski et al., 2012 ). As it can be seen in Fig. 3 on the left side, aeration has the greatest share and therefore the greatest potential for energy efficiency improvements. Nearly every MBR type contains energy consumers listed in Fig. 3 (left), only varying in dosing pumps for chemical additives.

How does electricity affect consumers?

Consumers have a new relationship with electricity, driven in part by increasing outages, but also by new technologies that open up new avenues of independence. Electric utility ratepayers have traditionally been a dependent class with little access to information, little control over their electricity, and perhaps consequently, little interest in electricity except maybe in the amount of the utility bill they must pay each month, or on those occasions when the grid experiences an outage. How can building technology reduce emissions?

Advancement in technologies has resulted in the improvement in efficiency from shifting to fully renewable energy-based system, use of latent heat storage units such as PCMs have demonstrated reductions in energy-related emissions. Emission reductions can also be achieved through advances in the manufacturing processes of building materials, replacing conventional materials with more environmentally friendly materials and shifting to renewable sources. The uses of wood and EWP have attracted much attention due to their natural and low emission features. Research studies have demonstrated that wood and wood products have achieved approximately 71% lower emissions than conventional RC structures. Emission reductions have also been achieved through improvements in the manufacturing processes of energy intensive materials such as cement, iron, and steel. These include substitute fossil fuel with renewable energy sources, producing green cement by using supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash, and reuse and recycling of materials to reduce emissions. The construction industry has a great potential to contributing to mitigate the global challenge of climate changes. With the advancement of energy efficient technologies and improvement in the manufacturing of building materials and products, the construction industry can become more efficient and environmentally friendly.

What factors affect the cost of energy?

One important factor which has a bearing on the cost of energy for the end-user is transport and distribution so that rural communities and rurally based industries are at a serious economic disadvantage compared with town dwellers and urban based industries. Improvements in distribution systems for all the main industrial fuels mainly benefit the large single consumer or large groups of small consumers in one locality, while the more remote and scattered communities in rural areas are left with the inefficient and more costly labour intensive methods of distribution.
