Borlaug (2019) describes pulsus paradoxus as a “direct result of competition between the right and left sides of the heart for limited space; for the right heart to fill more, the left heart must fill less.” This leads to a decrease in left ventricular diastolic volume, a lower stroke volume, and a decrease in systolic pressure during inspiration.
