What is a refill prescription?

When a prescription with refills is being utilized , those subsequent renewals are actual 'refills'. Anytime there is a new prescription (ie: new RX number assigned) sent to the pharmacy, it is in fact a new prescription. The fact that new prescription is the same drug/direction/quantity as your previous is just coincidence/convenience. We call it a refill for brevity sake when speaking with patients, but this distinction has legal implications in certain states that require pharmacist consult.

Why is my CVS prescription on hold?

When a new prescription is received and not filled, it is put on hold. CVS's system, and other similar ones, locks this prescription until it's actually dispensed on our end. Back before July last year, all prescriptions could automatically be put on hold by anyone and this would just bypass the pharmacist. This is one reason why your RX is not able to be initiated on your end, because at this stage the prescription hasn't been actually validated by the pharmacist to be correct. In Rxnet now, all on hold's are supposed to be verified before being put on hold, so that other stores can just pull the prescription. This has to be done every time the RX is pulled from the profile, which is tedious at best. There is a weird glitch though that when we do return to stocks and put the prescription on hold, it bypasses the verification step and puts it in limbo until the RX is reran in the profile and put back on hold, again. So I suspect that at this rate, the patient will never be able to initiate first fill.
