How much DDR2 ram can I use?

The maximum capacity on commercially available DDR2 DIMMs is 8GB, but chipset support and availability for those DIMMs is sparse and more common 2GB per DIMM are used.

Are there different types of DDR2 RAM?

PC2- indicates the module uses DDR2 memory; PC- indicates the module uses DDR memory. Other common speeds for DDR2 SDRAM modules include PC2-3200 (DDR2-400; 3200Mbps throughput); PC2-5300 (DDR2-667); PC2-6400 (DDR2-800); and PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066).

Does it matter if the motherboard has tin contacts in the memory slots?

The type of memory slots in your motherboard determines which you should use. If your motherboard memory slots have tin contacts, use memory modules with tin contacts; if the memory slots use gold contacts, use memory modules that also have gold contacts.

How do I identify my RAM type?

Check RAM Type Checking RAM type, once you know the speeds you're supposed to be looking for, is very easy. Open Task Manager and go to the Performance tab. Select memory from the column on the left, and look at the very top right. It will tell you how much RAM you have and what type it is.

How can I tell what DDR my RAM is?

There are cut mark on all RAM Notch means that is called “Notch”. If you notice the cut mark all ram has cut mark. There is a cut mark on DDR1 above the chip, as you can see on above displayed picture. There is no distance difference On DDR2 and DDR4, the cut seems similar, so we need to identify them by chip.

How do you troubleshoot faulty RAM?

The next easiest way to test your memory is with Windows 10 (opens in new tab)'s built-in Memory Diagnostic tool.Search for "Windows Memory Diagnostic" in your start menu, and run the application. ... Select "Restart now and check for problems." Windows will automatically restart, run the test and reboot back into Windows.More items...•

How can I fix my RAM problem?

Depending on what is causing the memory errors, you can try the following options:Replace the RAM modules (most common solution)Set default or conservative RAM timings.Increase the RAM voltage levels.Decrease the CPU voltage levels.Apply BIOS update to fix incompatibility issues.Flag the address ranges as 'bad'

Is PC2 RAM the same as DDR2?

Any memory that says either DDR2 or PC2 means the same thing. Likewise DDR3 is the same as PC3. The other numbers indicate the speed of the memory. You should always try to match the speed (i.e. 6400, 10666, 12800, etc) on all sticks you put in the same machine.

What is the difference between PC2 5300 and 6400?

PC2 5300 speed is 667Mhz. PC2-6400 speed is 800Mhz. If your system is designed for PC2-6400, it may or may not run on the PC2-5300. If it does run it will be slightly slower.

What are the 3 types of RAM?

SRAM, DRAM, and ECC. Static random access memory (SRAM) and dynamic access memory (DRAM) are two classifications of memory. With SRAM, data is stored using a six transistor memory cell. SRAM is frequently used as cache memory for the processor (CPU) and is not typically user-replaceable.

What memory is in the XPS 700?

The Service Manual clearly states that the only memory acceptable in the XPS 700 is the 533MHz and 667MHz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM.

Does Dell use cheap RAM?

The real difference is obvious in everything from games to startup. Dell does use cheap Ram, but they also prevent us from buying good 800 speed Ram. I own a XPS 700 and it is a good system, but it is ashamed that Dell cheaped out here. This could or SHOULD have been a great system. 0 Kudos.

RAM speeds are like tire ratings in that they indicate the maximum supported speed. You would expect a tire rated for 150MPH to work fine at 40MPH. The same is true with RAM. So long as it's the same memory type, there is no problem using a faster stick of RAM in a board with slower memory support.

Anti-Trend Nonconformist Geek

You won't get 800MHz out of it if the board doesn't support that speed, but memory will function at the top rated speed of the board. The memory will just be running a bit lower than its rated specs, which is fine.

Anti-Trend Nonconformist Geek

Yes, exactly. As long as the voltage matches, clocking down the speed of the DDR2 won't harm anything.

Hello to everyone, i'm new at this forum. Congratulations for offering such a useful tool to the world!

Is the 800MHz stick the same voltage and CAS latency as the other stick? Some memory has different voltage requirements with others, and may not be compatible with your mobo.

Hi Anti Trend and thanks for your kind answer. See, all I know about my motherboard and the memory I bought is this:
