Can Narcan be used for anything other than overdose?
Will naloxone (Narcan) work if the person overdosed on something other than an opioid? No. Naloxone (Narcan) will only work to reverse the effects of opioids.
What else is Narcan used for?
NARCAN® Nasal Spray is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of a known or suspected opioid overdose emergency with signs of breathing problems and severe sleepiness or not being able to respond.
What happens if you give Narcan to someone not on opioids?
Naloxone can quickly restore normal breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose. But, naloxone has no effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system, and it is not a treatment for opioid use disorder.
Is Narcan used for alcohol poisoning?
Naloxone only works on overdoses caused by opioids. This family of drugs includes prescription painkillers like OxyContin, fentanyl, methadone, and Vicodin, as well as street drugs like heroin. Naloxone will not reverse overdose resulting from non-opioid drugs, like cocaine, benzodiazepines (“benzos”), or alcohol.
Can Narcan be used for benzo overdose?
Will naloxone work in an alcohol or benzodiazepine (Valium®, Klonopin®, Xanax®) overdose? No. Naloxone only reverses the effects of opioids. Examples of opioids include hydrocodone, oxycodone, fentanyl, morphine, and heroin.
Will Narcan get you high?
Will naloxone make you high? No. the only effect of naloxone is to reverse the effect of opioids. It cannot make you high: if you are not using opioids, an injection of naloxone would feel the same as an injection of water.
