She is alone; she has no one to tell her stories to, but when she ventriloquises her suffering through her song, she imagines herself speaking to a friend. This desire for companionship stands in stark contrast to the would-be tragic heroes Laertes and Hamlet, who understand their increasing social isolation as proof of the justice of their cause. A tragic hero must stand alone, but what Ophelia really wants is a friend with whom she can communicate freely, without concern for moderation or ‘prettiness’.
