Eventually, Floyd and his wife get divorced. Floyd wants to start his own rental business, but he has little money, so he breaks into a store to steal some lawnmowers, hoping he can rent them out. He is caught, arrested, and sentenced to three to five years in prison.
In Cold Blood describes the plan for the invasion that led to the murders as being hatched by Hickock, who during a previous stint in prison learned from cellmate Floyd Wells – a former employee of the Clutters – that the family kept a safe in the home that contained $10,000.
