Full Answer

Is IEC 62305 based lightning protection system?

BS EN/IEC 62305-1 has defined four Lightning Protection Levels (LPLs) based on probable minimum and maximum lightning currents. These LPLs equate directly to classes of Lightning Protection System (LPS).

What is Type a and Type B earthing?

Type A – The conventional LPS Earthing system using. vertical or horizontal electrodes such as. copperbond Earth rods or copper tape. Type B – The ring electrode sited around the periphery of the structure. Foundation Earth Electrodes.

What is the British standard for lightning protection?

IEC/BS EN 62305-3 provides the requirements for the protection of a structure against physical damage, by means of a lightning protection system, and for protection against injury to living beings due to touch and step voltages, in the vicinity of an LPS.

What is the standard for lightning arrester?

The applicable Indian standard IS/IEC 62305 supersedes old IS 2309:1989 standard for lightning protection.

What are the 4 types of earthing?

There are mainly 4 types of Earthing systems in India, Plate Earthing, Pipe Earthing, Mat Earthing, and Rod Earthing. Pipe earthing is one of the popular earthing systems in India that suits every soil type.

What are the 3 types of grounding?

Three different types of grounding systems that are important are listed below.Ungrounded Systems.Resistance Grounded Systems.Solidly Grounded Systems.

Is BS EN 62305 a legal requirement?

However, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 do apply to most businesses. This means that adherence to BS EN/IEC 62305 for the installation of lightning protection systems is compulsory.

What is level 1 lightning protection?

Lightning protection levels (LPL) (A) Level I-200 kA (B) Level II-150 kA (C) Level III-100 kA. LPL-I covers a pulse of 200 kA as a worst-case scenario of a direct strike of a lightning and pertains to external lightning protection facilities as shown in Fig.

What is Class 2 lightning protection?

T2 - Type 2 / Class II. The Type 2 Surge Protection Devices are the main protection system for all low voltage electrical installations. Installed in each electrical switchboard, it prevents the spread of any overvoltages in the electrical installations and protects the loads.

What are three types of lightning arrester?

What IEC 62561?

This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for metallic connection components that form part of a lightning protection system (LPS). Typically, these can be connectors, clamps, bonding and bridging components, expansion pieces and test joints.

What is the 30 30 rule for lightning?

When You See Lightning, Count The Time Until You Hear Thunder. If That Is 30 Seconds Or Less, The Thunderstorm Is Close Enough To Be Dangerous – Seek Shelter (if you can't see the lightning, just hearing the thunder is a good back-up rule). Wait 30 Minutes Or More After The Lightning Flash Before Leaving Shelter.

What is Type B earthing?

Type B Earthing or Ring Earthing forms a perimeter around the structure. Ring Earthing should: be a closed ring of conductors If it is not possible to close the ring, a connection must be made inside the building using conductive metallic equipment such as pipes. be at least 0.5m below the surface.

What are the 2 types of grounding?

There are two kinds of grounding: (1) electrical circuit or system grounding, and (2) electrical equipment grounding. Electrical system grounding is accomplished when one conductor of the circuit is intentionally connected to earth.

What are the different types of earthing systems?

The IEC 60364 standard has defined three types of Earthing Systems, namely TT, IT, and TN systems.

What is the difference b'n ground and neutral?

What is the IEC 62305?

IEC 62305 'Protection against lightning' requires a risk assessment be carried out to determine the characteristics of any lightning protection system to be installed. There is a lot of hype about about this being a complicated process, however in reality it is very simple.

Is IEC Risk Assessment Calculator free?

After reading the standard, calculating the risk level may seem like a complicated process. Help is at hand however. In purchasing the standard the 'IEC Risk Assessment Calculator' software is provided free of charge. This is a very straightforward piece of software to use requiring the structure dimensions to be entered and various parameters selected from drop down lists. The entire process can be completed in only a few minutes and assessment reports generated.

What is IEC 62304?

IEC 62304 is a safety standard for medical devices, and compliance with it is critical to software developers. Whether it’s a doctor, a specialist, or a nurse, healthcare providers depend on medical devices to treat their patients. Those safety-critical systems need to be secure and reliable to ensure everything has been done to prevent any ...

What is the caveat of IEC 62304?

Although IEC 62304 is filled with highly detailed documentation that tells you what should be done to create compliant software, the caveat is that it doesn’t really tell you how it should be done. These guidelines were intentionally created that way to account for evolutionary changes in development practices or introduction of new technologies.

Why Are There Different ISO Standards for Medical Devices?

Instead, they’re often broken up into different standards to cover different aspects or needs of the device under development. For some standards, amendments are added to include updates and/or address emerging problems. And although there’s a lot of labor costs and information to keep track of in satisfying compliance regulations, it is indeed in the best interest for medical companies to deliver safe products that help ensure the practitioner’s and the patient’s safety and security.

What Is ISO 14971 & the Process of Risk Defined in It?

The processes in ISO 14971 are intended to mitigate risks, such as those that can be associated in biocompatibility, data and systems security, electricity, radiation, and accessibility.

How does ISO 50001 help?

To help with other sustainability savings, ISO 50001 helps reduce operating expenses by helping identify ways to improve energy efficiency. Having the tools and processes that allow a business to run are part of the quality management side of any organization, and these standards are all a piece of the puzzle.

What is a Class III device?

Class III: High-risk devices designed to sustain or support life. Class III devices are life-saving tools like defibrillators, pacemakers, or high-frequency ventilators. Of all the classifications, Class III devices account for only 10 percent of all the devices regulated by the FDA. That’s because of the risk involved.

Is ISO 13485 the same as ISO 9001?

ISO 13485, on the other hand, complements ISO 9001 by incorporating additional medical device requirements, but also by evaluating whether your QMS is appropriate and effective while emphasizing the safety and efficacy of medical devices.

What is BS EN/IEC 62305-2?

BS EN/IEC 62305-2 specifically deals with making a risk assessment, the results of which define the level of Lightning Protection System (LPS) required. While BS 6651 devoted 9 pages (including figures) to the subject of risk assessment, BS EN/IEC 62305-2 currently contains over 150 pages. The first stage of the risk assessment is to identify which of the four types of loss (as identified in BS EN/IEC 62305-1) the structure and its contents can incur. The ultimate aim of the risk assessment is to quantify and if necessary reduce the relevant primary risks i.e.:

How many parts are in BS EN/IEC 62305?

The BS EN/IEC 62305 series consists of four parts, all of which need to be taken into consideration. These four parts are outlined below:

What is protective angle?

The protective angle method is a mathematical simplification of the rolling sphere method. The protective angle (a) is the angle created between the tip (A) of the vertical rod and a line projected down to the surface on which the rod sits (see Figure 16). The protective angle afforded by an air rod is clearly a three dimensional concept whereby the rod is assigned a cone of protection by sweeping the line AC at the angle of protection a full 360º around the air rod. The protective angle differs with varying height of the air rod and class of LPS. The protective angle afforded by an air rod is determined from Table 2 of BS EN/IEC 62305-3 (see Figure 17). Varying the protection angle is a change to the simple 45º zone of protection afforded in most cases in BS 6651. Furthermore the new standard uses the height of the air termination system above the reference plane, whether that be ground or roof level (See Figure 18). The protective angle method is suitable for simple shaped buildings. However this method is only valid up to a height equal to the rolling sphere radius of the appropriate LPL.
