What is a cartridge-type circulator?

Cartridge circulators, meanwhile, are water-lubricated. “These do not require oil and have very few replaceable parts,” O’Brian says. “Cartridge circulators may need a new cartridge every now and again,” but there’s not often cause to replace the pump itself. For that reason, cartridge-type circulators have become standard.

Why choose 00 ® series cartridge circulators?

What is a circulator in a heating system?

A circulating pump is a water pump that moves hot water around your heating system. The water travels from your boiler through to the pipes that feed your radiators, towel rails, and hot water cylinder. The water then flows back to the boiler to maintain a constant flow of heated water around your home.

What is the difference between a pump and a circulator?

A bicycle pump is a pump. So is an oil pump on an oil burner. When those machines start, you expect to get a pressure on the outlet side of the pump that's greater than the pressure on the inlet side of the pump. A circulator is different because it's working within a closed, pressurized hydronic system.

Is a circulating pump worth it?

A hot water recirculating pump will save you money, especially if you have a larger family. A family of 4 with normal water usage can expect to save $50-$75 a year. Since pumps cost about $200 each, the recirculating pump will pay for itself in 3-4 years. .

What happens if circulator pump fails?

Circulator Pump Malfunctions Water will still circulate through the boiler's system via convection should the pump break… but it will be very weak. This will result in a drop in heating power, and when you notice it you should immediately call for repairs.

Do circulator pumps use a lot of electricity?

Secondly, hot water recirculation pumps use a decent amount of energy - this also needs to be factored into potential savings. A pump that consumes 25 watts of power would use around 200 kWh of electricity each year. The average price of electricity in the US and Canada is $0.13 per kWh and $0.17 per kWh, respectively.

Are recirculating pumps bad for pipes?

Recirculating Hot Water Can Corrode Pipes.

Do circulator pumps run all the time?

The most common circulator pumps run all day, every day, whether you're actively using hot water or not. This causes a lot of heat to dissipate in the pipes 24/7 and requires the water heater to work harder to keep the water hot.

What is the part number for a water heater cartridge?

The part number for the cartridge is 005-020R. Hopefully, you have shut off valves on either side of the circulator. If not, you’ll have to shut off the water to the hot water heater and drain the pressure from the line by opening a hot water faucet.

How to evaluate a pump without dismantling?

To evaluate a pump without dismantling the pump, a clamp amp is recommended to measure the amp load. If it’s close to nameplate amps, the pump could be running but not pumping water. This would suggest a system related problem, where simply purging the system should correct the problem.

Do you have to drain the water before or after a circulator?

If you have shut off valves before and after the circulator, it would be a piece of cake. If not, you will have to drain off the excess pressure of the system after you have shut off the supply water, which is normally just before the pressure reducing valve. Close off all the valves in the water piping around the boiler, including air vents.

nhmaster Master Plumber

Better yet, take the wiring cover off the circulator and check voltage at the circulator. If it has power but will not run, it is bad. Changing it out requires draining the pressure off of that zone (perhaps the whole system if it is not isolated)

There are two yellow wires under the cover that attach to the wires going to it with a couple of wire nuts. shut off the power before changing things.

How does a circulator pump work?

By adding a circulator pump and constantly circulating a small amount of hot water through the pipes from the heater to the farthest fixture and back to the heater, the water in the pipes is always hot, and no water is wasted during the wait. The tradeoff is the energy wasted in operating the pump and the additional demand on ...

What causes cavitation in a pump?

In the event of an excessive pressure decrease, in some parts of the rotor, the pressure can be lower than the saturation pressure corresponding to the temperature of the pumped liquid, causing the so-called cavitation, i.e. liquid evaporation. To prevent this, the pressure in the suction port (at the inlet of the pump) should be higher than the saturation pressure corresponding to the liquid temperature by the net positive suction head (NPSH).

What is a thermostatically controlled water heater?

These thermostatically controlled pumps often have a built-in "normally closed" check-valve which prevents water in the cold water line from entering into the hot water line.
