What Is Livability?

Livability is a measurement of how attractive a neighborhood, city and/or region is for you based on a variety of factors. It’s a subjective exercise, as everyone will have different priorities on what they want from an area where they live.

How to Measure Livability

To measure livability effectively, you’ll need to picture what your life would be like in the home and how that measures up to your current living situation and your goals. Ranking what’s most important to you, such as figuring out what’s a “need to have” versus a “nice to have” is one way to start.

Where to Find Livability Rankings

It’s easy to measure livability if you’re moving from one part of a metro area to another because you can visit the area and have better luck finding people you know who live there.

How to Plan for Livability Change

Livability factors can evolve throughout your life, so it’s important to plan for potential shifts in what you might want from a community and/or how it might change years from now.#N#A couple of ways to anticipate livability change include:

Methodology

In compiling the list, the research team at the Martin Property Institute conducted an extensive survey comparing what people valued within the communities of each location studied. Over 2,000 cities were analyzed through this study, and then ranked accordingly.

Guiding Principles

There are four primary principles which can make or break a city’s bid to earn a position on the list. Access to amenities is one of them, as every city needs to have basic facilities such as schools, hospitals, airports, and a reasonable climate to be attractive. Affordability is the second criteria.

Midwestern Reign

Cities in the Midwest have come to dominate the list, with Madison, Wisconsin achieving the number one place. Other cities like Rochester, Michigan and Overland Park, Kansas ranked highly as well.

How are things on the West Coast?

Many cities in California approached the top of the list. Palo Alto and Berkeley, California filled the 5th and 6th spots, respectively. As anyone who's been to California knows, it's an expensive place to live. Nonetheless, California’s excellent schools, beautiful weather, and excellent amenities make it very attractive.

A Lack of Southern Charm

Few well-known southern cities made the list. Most of the larger cities in the South weren't highly ranked, primarily due to poor public transportation and a high cost of living. However, mid-size cities like Sandy Springs, Georgia and Greenville, South Carolina fared much better on the list.

The Best Big Cities

Using the Livability Score, AreaVibes ranks more than 45,000 cities and neighborhoods to showcase the best places to live in the United States and Canada. The list of the best places to live can be sorted by state/province or as an overall list across all of the USA or Canada.
