A septate hymen refers to a band of extra hymeneal tissue running vertically in the area of the normal hymen. A hymeneal septum may interfere with a woman's ability to insert a tampon or she may find that she can insert the tampon but once it expands with blood, she cannot remove the tampon.
What does a Hymenal ring look like?
If the hymen is intact, it may look like a thin disc covering the opening of the vagina or a doughnut-shaped ring around the vagina (hymenal ring). If the hymen isn't fully covering the vaginal opening, it may look like a crescent or half-moon. Some hymens have small perforations or multiple openings.
Why would someone need a hymenectomy?
The most common reasons for a hymenectomy include: Improving the flow of your blood, secretions, and tissue out of the vagina during menstruation. Making it easier to use a tampon, especially removing one that has expanded with blood. Reducing pain or discomfort associated with vaginal penetration.
What does a Microperforate hymen look like?
Typically it is shaped like a half moon, leaving space for menstrual blood to flow out of the vagina. A microperforate hymen is when this thin membrane almost completely covers the opening to the vagina, with only a very small hole in the middle, making it difficult for menstrual blood to flow out.
Can you open your hymen yourself?
You can also stretch your hymen yourself through a relatively simple procedure. Place a finger into your vagina (you can slick it up first with lube) and apply pressure on the vaginal entrance by pressing downward toward the anus. Keep the pressure on for a few minutes, and then release it.
Should the hymen be removed?
Hymenotomy is recommended for those who suffer from the following conditions: Imperforate hymen – This refers to a congenital condition wherein the hymen completely obstructs the vagina due to the organ's failure to perforate during embryologic development.
Can Obgyn break your hymen?
If indeed your hymen is still intact your gynecologist will be able to see this. A speculum could then, yes, break or stretch this membrane. When the hymen is first separated, such as with intercourse or tampon use, very mild bleeding and sometimes slight pain may occur.
How can I check my hymen at home?
Hold the mirror in front of your vagina and angle it upwards to that you can see the opening. Use your index or middle finger to spread open the labia (vaginal lips) You should be able to see a thin, moon-shaped fleshy membrane across the lower section of your vaginal opening if the hymen is intact.
Is it normal to have a small hole in your hymen?
Most girls have a small crescent- or donut-shaped opening in their hymen. This opening allows for access to the vagina. Approximately 1 in 1,000 girls are born with what's called an imperforate hymen. This is a hymen in which no opening to the vagina is present.

You likely won't know if your hymen has broken. Even if you notice discomfort or a small amount of blood after your first sexual intercourse experience, it could be due to different reasons — such as a lack of foreplay, lubrication, fast penetration, or being tensed up about it being your first time having sex.

If she is afraid of penetration, you can first start by inserting a finger inside her vagina during foreplay. Then, if she s comfortable, insert another finger and practice fingering until she overcomes the fear, which could include bleeding during sex the first time.

An imperforate hymen is caused by failure of the hymen to perforate (open) during a baby's growth and development inside her mother's uterus.
How much does a hymenectomy hurt?
A hymenectomy takes less than one hour and recovery is rather quick, about one week. You may experience a little bit of discomfort following the procedure, but the pain is typically well controlled with over the counter medications such as ibuprofen.
What happens during a hymenectomy?
The hymen is opened with scissors or a scalpel, and the tissue is cut away. To close the incisions, the gynecologist will use the sutures that will dissolve on their own.
