How long is a nols trek?
NOLS offers shorter courses, but I recommend doing a 30 day or longer trek. Why? The longer you’re out in the field, the more you learn about yourself, others, and the outdoors. Sure, you may hike and camp a lot with family or friends, and that’s great. But NOLS is an intensive, immersive outdoor experience. After 30 or more days in the field, you’ll be more confident in yourself as an outdoorsperson—and as a human being.
Can you bring Joyce Carol Oates book to Nols?
On departure day, you may find yourself fighting the urge to cry as your NOLS instructor says you can’t bring your 4 pound copy of the new Joyce Carol Oates book. Don’t cry. It will all be okay. NOLS knows how to pack a backpack for long expeditions and, especially with some of their new lightweight courses, their knowledge is only getting better.
Do NOLS courses have college credit?
Most NOLS courses offer college credit for students. All NOLS students get thoughtful evaluations and grades at the conclusion of the course. And if you’re past student age, put it on your resume. It’s an interesting outlet to talk about your passion for the outdoors, leadership skills, and work ethic.

What are the skills taught in NOLS?
Outdoor Skills. Skills taught on NOLS courses include backpacking, canoeing, caving, climbing, fly-fishing, horsepacking, mountaineering, rafting, river kayaking, sailing, sea kayaking, skiing, snowboarding, etc. Students gain insight into how to choose equipment, clothing, and how to feed themselves in the outdoors.
How did the Nols school grow?
NOLS grew enormously during the 1970s, due to the publicity gained by an appearance on NBC 's Alcoa Hour. The episode, titled "30 Days to Survival," followed a NOLS course as they traveled through the Wind River Range. The school's focus became more ecological; conservation and preservation began to rank with leadership training in terms of emphasis. As a result of the airing, the school’s enrollment grew from 250 students in 1969 to over 750 in 1970. The school also gained publicity in December 1969 from the Life magazine article, “Last Mountain Man? Not If He Can Help It," which featured the school and Paul Petzoldt. The school's growth continued; by the end of 1976, NOLS had 40 instructors and from 1976 to 1977, had enrolled 1,523 students.
What did NOLS do in the 1980s?
During the 1980s, NOLS continued to evolve. NOLS partnered with the University of Utah to offer college credit for courses, and helped create the U.S. Leave No Trace program. In 1989, NOLS adopted an outcome-based education model. In 1999, NOLS acquired the Wilderness Medicine Institute, one of the nation's foremost trainers of wilderness medicine. NOLS also began to offer professional training to corporate and institutional clients, including NASA.

What is a wilderness medicine instructor?
Every instructor has years of emergency medical experience in the fore that they bring to the table , often from wildly different backgrounds. The instructors are good at bringing in their own experiences to enhance your learning environment. This makes for both an entertaining, and productive classroom.
What do you learn in clinical rotations?
During you clinical rotations, you will be working among experienced doctors, nurses, paramedics, and EMTs. They say that most of your learning in emergency medicine will be done while working. You need all the skills and knowledge taught in the classroom to complete the course and pass the NREMT, but realize that these working medical professionals will be able to provide insight that is hard to find in the classroom. If you can, pick their brains for a moment. You many learn a few nuggets of wisdom that will help you pass the class, and become a well rounded EMT.
Do instructors try to fail you?
In some cases, it may help to tuck your ego away momentarily. Your instructors are not trying to fail you. They are merely trying to help you learn.
Is the Nols WeMT course worth it?
That being said, I think it is worth every penny. If you are finding the price tag too steep, know that NOLS offers scholarships. Fortunately, I was able to secure a scholarship to help me pay for my course. After your course, write a thank you letter, and NOLS will send it to your donor.
