How to lay batting on a wall?
If your design wall is small then you should be able to slowly unfold the batting adhering it to one half of the wall by slowly laying the batting on top of the board, smoothing it out from the centre until you reach the end. The principle is the same for a large design wall except that this step is best undertaken with multiple hands. I had one person on either side of the wall slowly and evenly laying the batting on top, with a third person using the clean broom to reach the centre and act as another pair of hands smoothing out the batting.

Step 1: Decide what size to make your design wall
I had a very specific design wall space in mind behind my sewing table.
Step 3: Attach your batting
Once you have a board of the size you want you need to cover it with some sort of material that will help your quilt blocks stick to it without pins.
Step 4: Attaching the Design Wall to the wall
Note: this bit is totally optional – you can absolutely make a design wall free standing if you like. Below is how I approached attaching it for those of you interested in more permanent design walls.
Why do I use flannel sheets?
The reason I chose a flannel sheet is that it’s lightweight, gives an even surface, and fabric and quilts will stick to it. I also think it looks much nicer and cleaner than batting and I can still pin into it if needed. We laid the flannel sheet on the floor first, and then gently laid the taped boards wrong side up on top of it.

Very smoothly and carefully, we wrapped the excess flannel around the boards, 2 sides at a time.
