Why is the E-REV engine smaller than the ICEV?
The engine of an E-REV is significantly smaller than that of a conventional ICEV – it only needs to meet average power demands because peak power is delivered by the battery pack. The engine of an ICEV, on the other hand, must also cover peak-power surges, e.g. accelerations.
How does E-Rev work?
Normally, the vehicle starts a trip with a fully charged battery in the EV mode. All power is provided by the battery and there are locally zero emissions from the vehicle. The battery will be partly recharged during regenerative braking. When the battery is depleted to a certain SoC, the vehicle will switch to the extended range mode. In this mode, an ICE will power a generator that supplies the average power for the electric propulsion motor. Additional power for acceleration will be provided by the battery. During regenerative braking, the battery is partly charged. After the trip the vehicle will be plugged e.g., in a standard household wall outlet and the switches to the charge mode.
Where is the Volt battery located?
The Volt battery is designed to fit into the transmission tunnel and fuel tank areas in a “T”-shaped pack design ( Figure 7.5 ).
