The starter relay, normally energized only by the ESS battery, now gets its power from both batteries because of the hack and signals the starter. The JL connects the batteries in parallel as per factory--even though the hack already had them connected that way, and the main battery then, somewhat depleted from the ESS event because of the hack, normally left alone during ESS, is still responsible (along with the ESS battery) for energizing the starter to crank the engine.
