What is incipient caries?
Today I want to tackle this topic of incipient caries, which in simple words is the early stage of tooth decay. You might have heard the name from the dentist or maybe found it somewhere, but if you have doubts about it, then you have come to the right place.
What is incipient tooth decay?
Incipient literally means to begin to develop or form. In this case, it is the beginning of the development of a carious lesion. However, this stage of tooth decay is the least harmful and the tooth can be reversed to its original surface texture. The initiation of caries is a result of loss of minerals from the tooth surface.
What is the pathophysiology of a caries lesion?
A caries lesion begins with the introduction of a disease state, likely due to bacterial strains, in the oral cavity. If accompanied or followed by alterations to salivary flow, frequent periods of reduced salivary pH, or frequent intake of refined carbohydrates, the demineralization of tooth structure is likely to begin.
Incipient caries mean incipient lesion
Having these caries means we have an incipient lesion. But what does this mean, what does it do?
How to fight the incipient caries?
Now that you know what it is and that it may harm your pearly whites in the distant future, now it is time to know how to stop it! This is quite easy to accomplish, as you just have to make sure your teeth regain those lost minerals more than they lose it.
Get those oral habits on point
And as usual, you require excellent oral habits. In case you need a reminder:
What is the first stage of carious dental lesion?
One of the two distinct stages in the development of a carious dental lesion. The first stage is the incipient lesion, marked by the appearance of a white spot. Microscopic pores course through the enamel to the subsurface demineralization, where the main body of the lesion is located. See also: caries.
Can sealants be used on teeth with incipient caries?
Leverett et al [33] reported that selective placement of sealants on teeth with incipient caries can improve the cost-effectiveness of the procedure.

Incipient caries can either progress into the soft dentin portion of the tooth or become inactive through remineralization. Active areas of enamel decalcification appear chalky and feel rough when your dentist examines them with a dental instrument. If a lesion has begun to heal itself, it will look shiny and feel hard and smooth.
