An introduction

Homebrew uses Git for downloading updates and contributing to the project.

Basic instructions

Make sure you run brew update before you start. This turns your Homebrew installation into a Git repository.

Convenience tools

Three commands are provided for displaying informational messages to the user:

Patches

While patch es should generally be avoided, sometimes they are temporarily necessary.

Advanced formula tricks

If anything isn’t clear, you can usually figure it out by grep ping the $ (brew --repository homebrew/core) directory. Please submit a pull request to amend this document if you think it will help!

Updating formulae

Eventually a new version of the software will be released. In this case you should update the url and sha256. You can use:

Style guide

Homebrew wants to maintain a consistent Ruby style across all formulae mostly based on Ruby Style Guide. Other formulae may not have been updated to match this guide yet but all new ones should. Also:

DESCRIPTION

Homebrew is the easiest and most flexible way to install the UNIX tools Apple didn’t include with macOS. It can also install software not packaged for your Linux distribution to your home directory without requiring sudo.

COMMANDS

Control Homebrew’s anonymous aggregate user behaviour analytics. Read more at https://docs.brew.sh/Analytics.

DEVELOPER COMMANDS

Check formula for Homebrew coding style violations. This should be run before submitting a new formula or cask. If no formula | cask are provided, check all locally available formulae and casks and skip style checks. Will exit with a non-zero status if any errors are found.

GLOBAL CASK OPTIONS

These options are applicable to the install, reinstall, and upgrade subcommands with the --cask flag.

CUSTOM EXTERNAL COMMANDS

Homebrew, like git (1), supports external commands. These are executable scripts that reside somewhere in the PATH, named brew-cmdname or brew- cmdname.rb, which can be invoked like brew cmdname. This allows you to create your own commands without modifying Homebrew’s internals.

SPECIFYING FORMULAE

Many Homebrew commands accept one or more formula arguments. These arguments can take several different forms:

SPECIFYING CASKS

Many Homebrew Cask commands accept one or more cask arguments. These can be specified the same way as the formula arguments described in SPECIFYING FORMULAE above.

I can't find this anywhere. Basically I was doing brew switch and after a homebrew update it says "Error: Calling brew switch is disabled! Use brew link @-versioned formulae instead."

gromgit on Dec 21, 2020

brew link doesn't support arbitrary versions. The "@-versioned formulae" mentioned in the first error are actually separate formulae that are created according to fairly strict rules: https://docs.brew.sh/Versions.

vikas027 on Dec 21, 2020

Sorry, didn't quite understand what do you mean by arbitrary versions. Does this mean we cannot use older versions at all? Can you please suggest an alternative?

gromgit on Dec 21, 2020

brew link literally doesn't allow you to specify a version to link; I believe it'll only link the current version specified in the corresponding formula. It's unfortunate that "version" in a Homebrew context means at least two different things: the usual software versioning (single release branch, with each version being superseded by newer ones, and becoming unsupported as a result) separate development branches of the same product, with separate formulae (e.g.

What was the motivation to disable the switch command? What should we use instead for a formula that is not versioned according to Homebrew's definition of versioned? For instance, I've used this for gradle for a couple of years. It was a breeze to use - as quick as possible. I never had problems with the command.

he-sk on Dec 27, 2020

I'm still interested to learn about the motivation of having switch disabled. I found out from the changelog that it was deprecated in 2.6.0 but the linked pull request doesn't provide additional information.

Ignalion on Jan 9

This is intended behavior. Homebrew will always provide you with the latest versions of software. If you need a specific ruby version, rbenv is my recommendation.

Cask

brew cask is an extension to brew that allows management of graphical applications through the Cask project.

Licensing

Availability through brew or cask does not imply any specific licence.
