Can You sedate a dog with Dexdomitor?

Most veterinarians will make clients aware of these risks before their dogs are placed under sedation. Dexdomitor for dogs (dexmedetomidine hydrochloride) is an alpha 2 adrenergic agonist drug that is used as a sedative and analgesic (pain reliever, although not strong enough for any surgical procedure).

What is dexmedetomidine used for in dogs and cats?

The use of dexmedetomidine as a preanesthetic in dogs and cats significantly reduces the amount of induction and maintenance anesthetic requirements. Careful patient monitoring during anesthetic induction and maintenance is necessary to avoid anesthetic overdose.

Neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow nerve cells to communicate with each other. Since noradrenaline is involved in maintaining alertness and arousal, reducing its release decreases the level of consciousness, including the sensation of pain. Dexmedetomidine is closely related to another substance used to sedate animals, medetomidine, that has been used in veterinary medicines for many years.

What is dexmedetomidine used for?

CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY: Dexmedetomidine is a potent non-narcotic alpha 2 -adrenoceptor agonist which produces sedation and analgesia. These effects are dose dependent in depth and duration. Blood pressure is initially increased due to peripheral vasoconstriction, subsequently dropping to normal or slightly below normal levels. Vasoconstriction may cause mucous membranes to appear pale or mildly cyanotic. This initial vasopressor response is accompanied by a compensatory marked decrease in heart rate mediated by a vagal baroreceptor. The peripheral pulse may feel weak and a transient change in the conductivity of the cardiac muscle may occur, as evidenced by first and second degree atrioventricular blocks. Other arrhythmias may occur. Dexmedetomidine also decreases the respiratory rate and decreases body temperature. The magnitude and duration of the decrease in body temperature is dose dependent. Dexmedetomidine causes depression of gastrointestinal motility due to decrease in smooth muscle activity, increases in blood glucose levels due to inhibition of insulin release, and increases in production of urine. Spontaneous muscle contractions (twitching) can be expected in some dogs sedated with dexmedetomidine. Vomiting in cats has been associated with alpha 2 -adrenergic agonist central stimulation of the brain 4.

How long does it take for dexmedetomidine to sooth?

Sedation and analgesia occurred within 5 minutes after IV dexmedetomidine, and within 15 minutes after IM dexmedetomidine, with peak effects approximately at 15 or 30 minutes, respectively. Why do veterinarians give dogs ivermectin?from coxwellvet.com

What test is used to determine if a dog has MDR1?from vcahospitals.com

What Is The Canine MDR1 Gene?from canna-pet.com

Unlike some genetic issues, it’s possible for even the most loving and doting dog owner to be completely unaware their dog carries the MDR1 gene until trouble arises. MDR1, which stands for “Multi-Drug Resistance 1”, occurs in a relatively short list of breeds and affects the way a dog’s body processes – or, more accurately, doesn’t process – a variety of canine-targeted medications such as ivermectin, the main ingredient in worming pills. As worming pills are routinely prescribed by vets to treat young dogs and puppies, MDR1 poses a significant health threat to the dog if the owner is unaware their new puppy is a carrier. Like most genetic issues, the most severe reactions will come from a dog that inherited the gene from both of his parents, while a single gene passing on is less worrisome, but still cause for concern.

What is the likelihood that my dog is affected by the MDR1 mutation?from vcahospitals.com

The effects of the mutation vary in severity, depending on whether the dog carries one or two copies of the mutation.

What breeds of dogs have MDR1?from vcahospitals.com

Other herding breeds, including Border Collies, English Shepherds, German Shepherds, and Old English Sheepdogs, have a less than 5% chance of carrying a defective copy of the MDR1 gene.

What happens if a dog has a buildup of toxins in his brain?from coxwellvet.com

When there has been a buildup of toxins in the brain, your dog will start to show neurological symptoms, such as weakness, lethargy, ataxia, disorientation, tremors, seizures, blindness, and death. When any of these symptoms occur, call your veterinarian immediately.

Do you need to give MDR1 results to a puppy?from coxwellvet.com

If your breeder has completed the testing on either the puppy or the parents, please be sure you have a copy of the results to give to your veterinarian so they can be treated appropriately. If the puppy has been purchased for breeding, MDR1 testing should be considered as important as any other test for that breed.

The dose depends on the body surface area in dogs (calculated using bodyweight) and bodyweight in cats.

Is Dexdomitor as effective as Medetomidine?

Dexdomitor was at least as effective as medetomidine in inducing general anaesthesia in cats in combination with ketamine. Dexdomitor also showed adequate effectiveness for deep sedation of dogs in combination with butorphanol, and for premedication in dogs and cats before induction of general anaesthesia, reducing the amount of anaesthetic that the dogs and cats require.

What is the best medication for dogs to reverse dexmedetomidine?

Intramuscular ANTISEDAN (atipamezole) may be routinely used to rapidly reverse the effects of dexmedetomidine in dogs. Since analgesic as well as sedative effects will be reversed, pain management may need to be addressed.
