What is the mechanism of action of Extavia?
The mechanism of action of EXTAVIA (interferon beta-1b) in patients with MS is unknown.
What is etavia made of?
EXTAVIA (interferon beta-lb) is a purified, sterile, lyophilized protein product produced by recombinant DNA techniques. Interferon beta-1b is manufactured by bacterial fermentation of a strain of Escherichia coli that bears a genetically engineered plasmid containing the gene for human interferon beta ser17. The native gene was obtained from human fibroblasts and altered in a way that substitutes serine for the cysteine residue found at position 17. Interferon beta1b has 165 amino acids and an approximate molecular weight of 18,500 daltons. It does not include the carbohydrate side chains found in the natural material.
Can you take analgesics with extavia?
Concurrent use of analgesics and/or antipyretics on treatment days may help ameliorate flu-like symptoms associated with EXTAVIA use [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS ].
Can extavia cause skin problems?
EXTAVIA may cause serious side effects. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the serious side effects of EXTAVIA, including: Injection site problems. Serious skin reactions can happen in some people, including areas of severe damage to skin and the tissue below the skin (necrosis).
How long after extavia is liver tested?
In addition to those laboratory tests normally required for monitoring patients with multiple sclerosis, complete blood and differential white blood cell counts, platelet counts and blood chemistries including liver function tests are recommended at one, three, and six months after introduction of EXTAVIA therapy, and periodically thereafter in the absence of clinical symptoms.
Can you continue Extavia after a site reaction?
For patients who continue on EXTAVIA after injection site necrosis has occurred, EXTAVIA should not be administered into the affected area until it is fully healed. If multiple lesions occur, therapy should be discontinued until healing occurs. Patients should be advised of the importance of the use of aseptic technique and rotating injection sites.
Can you take Extavia with alcohol?
Severe hepatic injury including cases of hepatic failure has been rarely reported in patients taking EXTAVIA. Consider the potential risk of EXTAVIA used in combination with known hepatotoxic drugs or other products (eg, alcohol). Monitor liver function tests and monitor for signs and symptoms of hepatic injury. Consider discontinuing EXTAVIA if serum transaminase levels significantly increase, or if they are associated with clinical symptoms such as jaundice.
Is Extavia contraindicated?
Contraindications. EXTAVIA is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to natural or recombinant interferon beta, Albumin (Human), mannitol or any other component of the formulation.
Can you discontinue Extavia if you have heart failure?
Monitor patients with pre-existing congestive heart failure (CHF) for worsening of their cardiac condition during initiation of and continued treatment with EXTAVIA. Consider discontinuation of EXTAVIA if worsening of CHF occurs with no other etiology.
What is Extavia used for in MS?
Extavia is a disease modifying drug for relapsing MS . You have fewer relapses than you might have had with no treatment and any relapses you do have should be less severe.
How to get used to Extavia?
To give your body a chance to get used to Extavia and reduce the impact of side effects, your doctor or MS nurse may suggest you start on a lower dose and gradually increase to the full dose .
Who can take Extavia?
Extavia can be prescribed for adults with active relapsing remitting MS.
How long after taking Extavia can you get blood work?
The recommendation for Extavia is that the first blood test, 3 months after starting to take the drug, is essential, but that further tests can be halted temporarily. If you notice any new or worsening MS symptoms, you should contact your MS team.
Can you take Extavia if you have depression?
It's important that you tell your MS team if you have any health problems or are taking other medicines. Extavia may not be suitable if you have severe depression or suicidal thoughts.
Is Extavia a DMD?
Extavia is a moderately effective (category 1.1) D MD; in clinical trials people taking Extavia had about 30% fewer relapses than people taking placebo. In clinical trials, MRI scans showed people taking Extavia had fewer, smaller or no new areas of active MS ( lesions ). Extavia may also slow down the build-up of disability associated with MS.
Does Extavia work for MS?
Extavia research. Extavia is a disease modifying drug for relapsing remitting MS. You self-inject Extavia under the skin every other day to reduce the number and severity of relapses. It reduces the number of relapses by about one third (30%), compared to placebo.

After mixing, store the medicine in the refrigerator and use within 3 hours. Do not freeze. Each single-use vial (bottle) or prefilled syringe is for one use only.
How often is Extavia injected?
Extavia is injected under the skin, usually every other day. A healthcare provider may teach you how to properly use the medication by yourself. Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you don't understand all instructions.
What happens if you are allergic to Extavia?
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Extavia: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Is Extavia safe for kids?
This medicine will not cure MS, but it may decrease flare-ups. It is not known if Extavia is safe and effective in children. .
