
What is the difference between group and save and cross match?
Group and save means they type your blood (eg:a+) and keep it (the save part) in case they need to cross match. Cross matching is when they check blood you are going I be given is compatible with you. Hope that makes sense! It's to do with your blood group and getting blood that matches ready in case you need a blood transfusion.
Do I need to make a group and save or X-match?
If Blood Bank have seen the patient before and already have a historic blood group (after 20thOctober 2015) then you only need to make a request for group and save or X-match as you normally do. If the patient has no previous records in Blood Bank then you MUST repeat the group and save or X-match with a second sample.

What is the difference between blood grouping and cross matching?

When do you crossmatch?
A crossmatch is performed prior to administration of blood or blood products (e.g. packed red blood cells). The purpose of the crossmatch is to detect the presence of antibodies in the recipient against the red blood cells of the donor. These antibodies attach to the red blood cells of the donor after transfusion.
What is group hold blood?
A Group and screen (also known as group and hold) includes the following: confirmation that patient details on the blood sample and request form are identical. the checking of historical information on the patient such as previous blood group, previous transfusion and obstetric history.
How long is crossmatch valid for?
72 hour rule. A blood group and antibody screen expires 72 hours after collection. A fresh blood group and antibody screen will be required for any units not commenced within the 72 hour period. The time and date of collection of the cross match specimen is indicated in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
How long is a G&S valid for?
Once the at-risk groups have been identified they should ALWAYS have a G&S taken. If they have been pregnant or transfused in the last 3 months the sample is valid for 72 hours. If not, sample is valid for 7 days. If frozen, plasma can be used for 3 months.

What are these tests used for? Your doctor uses blood typing and crossmatching to learn if donor blood or organs are compatible with your blood. Incompatible donor blood or organs can cause harmful interactions. Your immune system may attack the donor material, leading to dangerous and even fatal reactions.

Ive been angry and awake for hours. BG: I do a day of paeds a week. I use a quad cane as I'm a bit disabled, I wipe it down a few times a day if it touches anything and during donning and doffing.
