What's in the box

Hey gearheads!!I am quick to complain about products that do not live up to claims, but in this case I used a product which exceeded my expectations by far: Por-15.Our Saab is mostly rust free except for the frame rails in the front clip, and the rear crossmember (the crossmember is replaceable... /if/ I want to do a full rear suspension rebuild).

Work's good

Work's good. Apply to bare metal (I use a spray gun) wash of with pressure washer, then paint. Sounds crazy, but it works.

Good Product

I'm a firm believer in following the steps. the POR15 instructions say to use this, so I did. Left a zinc coating on the metal that was needed for the POR 15 to adhere to to the metal.

metal prep

Did the job I needed it to do. Thank you to my friend who suggested it.

Rust buster

Does the trick...took a few more applications but it took care of some serious rust.

Auto restoration or any other metal painting project. POR15 is a great product if used correctly...

Good stuff for your restoration projects. Etches the metal for good adhesive

Guest Buckeyebill

I am restoring a 38 Buick Coupe. I have it stripped to bare metal. I have minor surface rust and before priming the car I have been told one can use Rustoleum to the only thing to use is PPG SV epoxy primer. Can anyone shed some more light on this?? Thanks in advance.

Larry Schramm

The first question is what brand of paint system are you going to use. If Dupont, or PPG, or what ever, the first thing that I would do is to contact the supplier and ask them what kind of metal prep that you need to use that is compatable with their paint.

Guest

What I use is a product called metal prep and it's a acid solution for etching the metal. After that wash it down with water to neutralize it and dry it fast (all of the water & metal prep must be gone), then spray epoxey etching primer to seal the metal.

Mark Shaw

I just use Ospho to prep bare metal body panels. It etches the surface and prevents surface rust from forming until the whole body is ready for primer.

Guest

Thanks Mark I will make a note of that. Doing it the way I described you've got to move pretty fast so I'm just doing sections at a time because it flashes pretty quick.

johnworden1

I've used a lot of SEM Rust Mort to treat bare metal before priming. Do a panel at a time and follow directions. Follow with epoxy primer. Etch primer and epoxy primer are 2 differant animals.

mrpushbutton

I really like helfen's response, that is how I learned. Get that epoxy primer on there to act as a binding agent.
