What is Michael Gazzaniga best known for? Gazzaniga, 71, now a professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is best known for a dazzling series of studies that revealed the brain’s split personality, the division of labor between its left and right hemispheres.
Through his extensive work with split-brain patients, Gazzaniga has made important advances in the understanding of functional lateralization in the human brain and how the cerebral hemispheres communicate with one another.
Michael Gazzaniga is Director of the SAGE Center for the Study of the Mind at UCSB.
Research
Dr. Gazzaniga conducts research on how the brain enables mind and behavior. Special patient populations are used in a variety of methodologies including visual psychophysics, brain imaging and anatomy.
