How does phosguard™ work?

PhosGuard™ rapidly removes phosphate and silicate from marine and freshwater aquaria. Although PhosGuard™ is effective in both fresh and marine water, it will operate better in sea water and the need for it is better defined in sea water. It is not recommended for phosphate buffered freshwater (PhosGuard™ would remove the buffer until saturated).

What is phosgard made of?

Phosgard has a preventative action and a curative action if sufficient root system remains. Contains: 400g/L phosphorous acid, present as the mono and di potassium salts, in the form of a soluble concentrate

Can phosguard be used as a phosphate buffer in freshwater?

It is not recommended for phosphate buffered freshwater (PhosGuard™ would remove the buffer until saturated). PhosGuard™ is highly porous and bead-shaped to promote easy water flow through and around it, thereby increasing both its efficiency and capacity.

Is phosgaurd a Band-Aid?

Phosguard, phosban, gfo, ect is a band-aid. Find the source of the nutrients that are feeding the algae. Cut back on feedings and the light cycle. Do large water changes often and the nutrients will come down depending on how much your rocks have soaked up. I totally disagree with PhosGaurd being "a band-aid".

How much phosphate will PhosGuard remove?

about 40,000 mgEach liter of PhosGuard™ has a theoretical capacity of removing about 40,000 mg of phosphate or about 100 mg/L phosphate in 100 gallons.

How effective is PhosGuard?

4.0 out of 5 stars PhosGuard works. PhosGuard works to decrease phosphate, moderately. It isn't as aggressive as GFO (granular ferric oxide, various brands), and consequently isn't as likely to drive your phosphate to zero and shock your corals.

Can you use too much PhosGuard?

It is entirely possible to overdose activated phosphate absorption medias in the aquarium, and PhosGuard™ is no exception. If phosphate-absorbing medias are overused, they can lower the phosphate so suddenly that sensitive aquatic organisms like corals and invertebrates can become stressed.

What is seachem PhosGuard used for?

PhosGuard is a high capacity and high efficiency filtration product, made by Seachem. It is designed for the removal of both phosphates and silicates from marine or fresh water aquaria. Silicates causes an unsightly brown and tan appearance on surfaces in the aquarium, especially rocks, sand and the glass.

How long can you use PhosGuard?

PhosGuard™ needs to be replaced every 4 days as long as there is a phosphate problem because, given an infinite amount of available phosphate, PhosGuard™ absorbs phosphate so quickly that it reaches its full capacity in 4 days.

Is PhosGuard safe for fish?

PhosGuard™ absorbs phosphate, and while fish are more-or-less ambivalent about phosphate levels, plants and corals are not. Corals require phosphate levels below 0.2 mg/L in order to be healthy, while plants require phosphate levels between about 0.25-1 mg/l in order to live and grow.

Does PhosGuard remove medication?

PhosGuard™ can be used alongside most supplements and types of filtration media, but is capable of removing medication from the water.

How do I remove silicates from my freshwater aquarium?

If you think that the silica isn't going away from just water, then you use a cloth to gently wipe it off from the surface of your aquarium plants.

How do you bring phosphates down in a marine tank?

The easiest and most common way to control phosphate is with granular ferric oxide, a phosphate removal resin, and the most common one of those is Rowaphos. This black/brown substance comes with a net bag, and you put it in the bag, then somewhere in your reef tank, in an area of high flow.

Does PhosGuard lower PH?

PhosGuard™ is not capable of impacting the mineral concentration in any way, so it will not directly impact the GH of the aquarium.
