This can be done for a variety of reasons, such as to remove debris or to make the pipe easier to clean. 1 How does a pipe reamer work? 3 What are the benefits of using a pipe reamer? 4 Why use a pipe reamer? 5 Can you ream any type of material?

How does HDD reaming work?

The drill pipe is connected to the product pipe or conduit using a pull head or swivel. The swivel is used to prevent rotational torque from spinning the product pipe. A reamer is placed between the pull head and the drill string to keep the drill hole open. A schematic of the HDD reaming process is shown in Figure 1-6.

What is Pipe Reaming?

It’s an efficient technique for replacing pipe underground. Often called “Pipe Eating” because the process removes the existing pipe while simultaneously installing the replacement pipe. Pipe reaming is limited to non-metallic underground pipes. It’s a great option when performing an underground trenchless pipe replacement.

Design, Planning, and Implementation

Engineering Perfect Systems relies on meticulous infrastructure design, method strategies and proper implementation. We use the best underground technology method based on where it’s best suited.

Trenchless Pipe Replacement Experience

For over 25 years, our underground construction services and pipe replacement projects are evident throughout the Bay Area, under roads, freeways, bridges, and tight spots other engineering companies consider complex. Our services are relied upon by municipalities, engineers, commercial, and residential clients.

What is Pipe Cake and Why is it Important

The combustion of the tobacco in your pipe releases carbon which sticks to the chamber wall of the pipe. This accumulation around the sides of the bowl is what we call cake .

The Argument Against Building Cake in Your Pipe

Cake buildup often facilitates ghosting, or the remnant flavors of a blend haunting a pipe and thus possessing future smokes. This is especially so with heavy Latakia blends or generously topped Aromatics .

When Should I Ream My Pipe?

Bear in mind that routine maintenance doesn’t mean you need to ream often, but before the cake is excessive. Cake builds slowly, especially if you’re regularly wiping down your pipe’s chamber. How often you need to ream depends on how much you smoke a given pipe, so we can’t really apply a generic timeframe.

How Much Should I Ream My Pipe?

Common advice you’ll often hear is to bring the cake down to about 1/8 th of an inch, or between the width of a dime and a nickel. Again, there’s no right answer until you know what you like. With that in mind, I think what’s most important is not going any further than you feel confident going.

Tools for Reaming a Pipe

There are a few reaming tools that can get the job done. Let’s dig into what they are and where their strengths and weaknesses lie.

Reaming Your Pipe

You put the thing in and turn right? Wrong! No wait…yeah, that’s kind of it.

Happy Reaming

It does take some practice to get proficient, but once you’re comfortable with it, reaming becomes another one of those many rituals that comes with pipe smoking; another task like packing, tamping, or cleaning that probably seems cumbersome to the outsider.

Why is the smoke hole at the bottom of a pipe important?

Because tobacco at the bottom of a bowl tends to absorb the moisture resulting from combustion from the upper layers of tobacco, more heat is necessary to keep it burning , ...

Can you smoke a pipe with a smoke hole?

Always be especially careful around the smoke hole and try to maintain its original condition as best you can. Any carving away at the smoke hole, either from charring or over-reaming, can change the pipe's smoking characteristics and leave it more susceptible to further damage.

Does cake help a pipe?

Cake helps insulate and protect the briar of a pipe, but if it gets too thick, it may have adverse effects. You've probably seen pipes in antique stores or flea markets that have too much cake. The remaining tobacco chamber can sometimes be little more than the diameter of a pencil, and I'm not sure how the owners managed to enjoy smoking them in that condition. Pipes afflicted with excess cake such as that are often cracked, and that is perhaps the best indicator that cake should be well managed.

Is the Senior Pipe Reamer out of stock?

Perhaps the most historically popular reamer is the Senior Pipe Reamer, which is also almost always out of stock. (Our site has an option, however, on all out-of-stock items for an email notification when the item is again available). The advantage of the Senior Reamer is its infinite adjustability.

Can you use a pipe knife to remove cake?

There is no perfect tool for cake removal, however, and with a pipe knife it's difficult to maintain consistent thickness of cake, though with practice and a steady hand it's possible. For ease of use, however, other tools are available, like the Brigham Pipe Reamer and the Neerup Chamber Reamer, both of which have blades on two sides and provide more consistency. The Brigham has the advantage of being adjustable, however, which is necessary, as any collection of pipes will tend to have chambers of differing widths.

Is it better to ream a pipe gradually or aggressively?

It's best to ream a pipe gradually, rather than aggressively, so adjustability is a benefit in multi-bladed reamers.

Can briar withstand repeated expansion?

Briar is very tough, but it can't withstand repeated forced expansion and contraction at the level that is forced on it by excess cake. However, removing cake the right way requires tools. Our grandfathers used pocket knives, and they work, but a sharp-tipped pocket knife risks damaging the walls of the tobacco chamber.

All About Pipe Reaming: What You Ought to Know

Cake is carbon that accumulates on the inside of the pipe bowl. Each time tobacco is burned some of this carbon residue is left behind and attaches itself to the walls of the bowl. Over time it accumulates, creating a useful buffer between the burning tobacco and the pipe.

Cake: Where Briarwood and Meerschaum Pipes Diverge

A common mistake pipe enthusiasts who buy or receive a meerschaum as a gift will make is to cultivate a nice cake inside the bowl. The fact is , however, that while cake is essential to a smooth, flavorful burn in a briarwood pipe, it’s not only unnecessary, it is in fact unwanted in a meerschaum pipe.

What is a guide pipe ream?

Guided Pipe Reaming is a trenchless method by which a pipeline is pulled into the ground after a pilot tube is installed on line and grade. This method is similar to Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), however instead on installing pilot rods from the surface and following a shallow arc that is suitable for pressure lines and electrical utilities, Guided Pipe Reaming is a pit launch application that installs pilot rods on line and grade without the requirement of oversized pullback reamers.

What can alternative pipe materials be considered based on?

Cost Reduction: Alternative pipe materials can be considered based on project requirements and geotechnical conditions.

Does guided pipe reaming use bentonite slurry?

Environmentally Friendly: Guided Pipe Reaming does not use high volumes of bentonite slurry to flush cuttings and potentially cause surface frac-out.

How to ream a pilot hole?

This is accomplished by reaming the hole to successively larger diameters. Generally the reamer is attached to the drill string on the bank opposite the drilling rig, rotated, and pulled (pushed in some instances) back through the pilot hole. Joints of drill pipe are added as the reamer makes its way back to the drilling rig. Large quantities of slurry are pumped into the hole to maintain its integrity and to flush out cuttings. While soil conditions do have an impact, the required number of reaming runs is mainly dependent on the diameter of the product pipe and the diameter of the pilot hole. It may vary from no reaming runs to several for large-diameter product pipes.

How to enlarge a bore hole?

One method, typically called a continuous bore hole, involves enlarging the pilot hole to the desired diameter while simultaneously pulling back the line product behind the reamer. In some situations with small-diameter product pipe or conduit, the pipe can be pulled straight into the pilot hole after the drill is completed. However, in most HDD operations the bore hole has to be reamed to enlarge the hole to accommodate pulling in the product pipe. Generally the bore hole is reamed to 1V2 times the outside diameter of the product pipe. This provides an annular void between the product pipe and the drill hole for the drilling fluids and spoils and for the bending radius of the product pipe.

Can you ream a bore hole without pulling back the pipe?

Sometimes it is necessary to ream the bore hole without pulling back the pipe. After the drill hole is reamed, the product pipe or conduit is pulled back through the hole filled with the drilling fluids. It is best to fabricate the product pipe on the exit side in one section so it can be tested and pulled in one continuous pullback.
