Is Ring shake related to the weather?

I believe that ring shake is weather related. Here in Little Rock, Arkansas, there have been several years of extreme heat without rain. In 1980 between July 13 to Sep 16, every day was over 100 degrees and no rain. The same for 1954, June to July. I know that everyone here is thinking that would more than likely cause radial checks than anything.

Can ring shake be caused by a bulldozer?

That said, I have seen ring shake in other species, most notably cherry, where no bacteria was obvious (no smell or stain), but in these cases, the tree was felled using a bulldozer, which I assume applied considerable shear forces while bending the trunk over.

Does Ring shake cause bacteria in Oak?

I'm not arguing here, but my experience with ring shake in oak is that bacteria is invariably present along the lines of failure. This either indicates cause or that bacteria will quickly colonize the separated zone.

What is the difference between ring and Smooth shank nails?

What causes ring shake?

A cup or ring shake follows the line of annual rings. The separation of the rings is generally caused during the growth of the tree, either by a check in the growth, or by bending and twisting under high winds.

What is star shake in timber?

Star shakes are formed due to extreme heat or severe frost action. They develop wider cracks on the outside of timber from bark to the sapwood. Radial shakes are developed radially from pith to the bark.

How many types of shakes are found in timber?

Shakes in Timber. These are cracks and splits found in felled trees due to many causes. Different kinds of shakes are identified such as cup shake, heart shake, star shake, etc. Heart shakes occurs in over- matured trees with more width at the centre and diminishes towards the edge.

What are cracks in wood called?

The Short Answer: Wood Checking Splits and cracks (known as wood checks in the industry) occur when wood shrinks as it dries. Wood shrinks roughly twice as much along with the growth rings (radially) as it does across the rings (tangentially).

How are wood shakes made?

Historically shingles were split from straight grained, knot free bolts of wood. Today shingles are mostly made by being cut which distinguishes them from shakes, which are made by being split out of a bolt.

How do you feel wind?

Even if you can't see the air around you, you can feel it, especially when it moves against you when the wind blows. When this happens, the gas molecules are pushed against your skin. When enough of them move against your skin, you feel it is a slight breeze.

28 hours ago Ring shake is a serious wood utilization problem in hemlock because of its frequency of occurrence and potential for degrading a high proportion of lumber when it is present. From Figure 3, in trees with no birdpeck, the probability of ring shake is between 50 and 60 percent, and considerably higher for trees with birdpeck, 70 to 75 percent ...
