11. Oatmeal
We all love to veg out at brunch but if you’re not feeling the whole food coma situation, oatmeal is the way to go.
10. Açaí Bowl
New to the brunch scene but already killing the brunch game are the açaí bowls. If you’re not sure what exactly an açaí bowl is, the best explanation for it is a really thick smoothie. Açaí is amazing for you, plus it tastes even better. Similar to oatmeal, the mix-ins and toppings are totally up to you.
9. Potatoes
The ideal brunch plate contains a side of potatoes. Roasted or fried, they are made to perfection. You can choose from hash browns, home fries, french fries, roasted potatoes, even sweet potatoes.
8. Waffles
If your sweet tooth is in full throttle, waffles are the perfect menu choice for you. Get ready to drown that bad boy in maple syrup, top it with whipped cream, and throw on every topping you can think of.
7. Bagels
As always, any kind of carb you’re craving readily accessible on the menu. It’s safe to say that a hungover brunch really puts the bae in bagel. It keeps you full for a day of studying, an afternoon of working out, and hits the spot every time.
6. The Scrambler
If you’re still indecisive, don’t worry, you can get the best of all the brunch foods on one plate: the scrambler. Usually, this consists of scrambled eggs made to order, a side of either bacon or sausage, potatoes of your choice and some toast. It covers all the food groups so it is impossible to leave the meal feeling unsatisfied.
5. Pancakes
You might think pancakes are virtually the same as waffles, but you could not be more mistaken. Unlike waffles, pancakes can be packed and stacked with sweetness.
Origin of the word
The 1896 supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary cites Punch magazine, which wrote that the term was coined in Britain in 1895 to describe a Sunday meal for "Saturday-night carousers" in the writer Guy Beringer's article "Brunch: A Plea" in Hunter's Weekly.
At colleges and hotels
Some colleges and hotels serve brunch. Such brunches are often serve-yourself buffets, but menu -ordered meals may be available instead of, or with, the buffet. The meal usually involves standard breakfast foods such as eggs, sausages, bacon, ham, fruits, pastries, pancakes, waffles, scones, and the like.
Military
The United States, Canada and United Kingdom militaries often serve weekend brunch in the dining facilities. They offer both breakfast and lunch options and are open from about 09:00-13:00 (though times vary).
Dim sum brunch
The dim sum brunch is popular in Chinese restaurants worldwide. It consists of a variety of stuffed buns, dumplings, and other savory or sweet food items that have been steamed, deep-fried, or baked. Customers pick small portions from passing carts, as the kitchen continuously produces and sends out more freshly prepared dishes.
Special occasions
Brunch is prepared by restaurants and hotels for special occasions, such as weddings, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's or Easter .
In other languages
The Chinese word "早午饭" ( pinyin: zǎo wǔfàn) is defined as brunch, with "早饭" ( zǎofàn; 早: morning, 饭: meal) meaning breakfast; and "午饭" ( wǔfàn; 午: noon, 饭: meal) meaning lunch. The combination of "早饭" and "午饭" is thus "早午饭", brunch.
Other places
The area now known as Leslieville neighbourhood is sometimes called the brunch capital of Toronto as many renowned establishments serve brunch in that neighbourhood. Brunch buffets also existed in other parts of Southern Ontario, including Kitchener-Waterloo, where the German-term Smorgasborgs was sometimes used, from the 1970s onward.
Plan Your Menu
When it comes to brunch, your options are myriad: You can serve breakfast dishes, lunch dishes, or a combination of the two. We suggest choosing one egg dish and one heartier dish, plus a cocktail or mocktail. Consider finishing off the menu with a fruit salad or pastries.
Eggs-cellent Options
When deciding what egg dish to make, take into account how much time you have to prepare and how much time you want to spend at the stove: Fritattas take a bit longer and require more ingredients than scrambled eggs, for instance. Then browse through our favorite egg dishes.
