[124] investigated A. latifolium and A. sceptrum. Both showed significant antiplasmodial activity. Some active compounds were isolated from their fruits: (+)- ( S )-nerolidol and 7 labdanes, coranarin B, galanal A and B, galanolactone, ( E )-8β,17-epoxylabd-12-ene-15,16-dial, (+)- ( E )-labda-8 (17),12-diene-15,16 dial. The labdanes showed a modest in vitro activity on chloroquine-sensitive P. falciparum strains. Kenmogne et al. [125] isolated five labdane diterpenoids from A. zambesiacum. Zambisiacolactone B ( 55) was the most active, with an IC 50 of 4.97 μM in vitro against P. falciparum. Powdered fruits of Reneilmia cincinnata are one of the major constituents of the ingredients of a steam bath used to treat fevers. A bioassay-guided fractionation of dichloromethane extract of the fruits led to the isolation of six sesquiterpenoids, including 1 (10) E ,5 E -germacradien-4β-ol ( 56) (IC 50 of 1.54 μM), 5 E ,10 (14)-germacradien1β,4β-diol ( 57) (IC 50 of 1.63 μM), and oplodiol ( 58) (IC 50 of 4.17 μM) [126] ( Table 17.2 ).

Cabrera (Asteraceae), collected in Paraguay. 159 The sweetness of this compound was increased to 400 times that of sucrose by methylation at the C-4′ hydroxyl to form a synthetic isovanillyl derivative ( 92 ). 159 Two dihydroflavonols, huangqioside E ( 96) and neoastilbin ( 97 ), were purified from Engelhardtia chrysolepis Hance (Juglandaceae). 160,161 However, their sweetness intensities were not evaluated. Compound 91 and three additional sweet dihydroflavonols ( 93–95) with a C-6 methoxy group were isolated from the leaves of Hymenoxys turneri K.F. Parker (Asteraceae), collected in Texas. 162 Compound 93, the 6-methoxylated analogue of compound 91, showed less than 50% of its sweetness potency. 19,162
