Trazodone, also know by brand names “Desyrel” and “Oleptro,” is an antidepressant medication that is used to treat major depressive disorders. Trazodone is a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor—not a narcotic. Yet, like narcotics, this drug has serious potential for abuse. What Is Trazodone?

Trazodone: Trazodone is the generic name for Desyrel and Oleptro. It was primarily developed as an antidepressant. It works by helping to increase the availability of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is considered a natural mood stabilizer. It is also the chemical that helps with sleeping, eating, reducing depression, and regulating anxiety.

Is Desyrel the same as trazodone?

Trazodone stays in your body for one day to three days or less, in general for 42 hours. It does not mean after this period, it is out of your system, some traces of the drug can still remain in the body at lower levels. Trazodone can cause a number of side effects and are as follows:

How long does trazodone stay in your system?

The starting dose of trazodone for depression is 150 mg daily. It can then be increased to a max dose of 600 mg daily, which may be split across multiple doses during the day. Because trazodone is used at high doses in depression, it is important not to stop the drug cold turkey.
