Where is the stamped wood on a span table?

Before jumping into the span tables, let's first consider wood species and wood grades. In general, all lumber is stamped near the end of the lumber piece by the manufacturer.

Do you need to do a lot of calculations to determine the size of the structural framing?

Don't worry, you won't need to do a lot of calculations in determining the size and placement of the structural framing within your house design. You will however, need to become familiar with reading your local floor joist span tables for floor beams, floor joists, window and door lintels, ceiling joists, roof joists, roof rafters, and roof ridge beams, as well as the sizing and spacing of wood studs tables.

How long are floor joists?

The floor joists are still 12' long but now you can see a floor beam running horizontally across the middle of the house (supported by the lower concrete foundation wall). The picture below shows what the framing for this floor would look like in a three-dimensional perspective.

How wide is a 2x12 post?

2" X 12" is the rough lumber dimension before it is run through the planer at the lumber mill. After it comes through the planer it will be 1-1/2" X 11-1/4" (so yes, a 2 X 12 does not measure 2" X 12"). This means that our 4-ply 2 X 12 will be 4 X 1-1/2 inches wide or 6 inches. Therefore a post to support this built-up floor beam will need to be 6" by 6". Framers generally nail together several pieces of dimensional lumber to create such posts. The wood column is nailed to the floor beam above and sits on a concrete pad at its base.

How many feet of supported length?

The supported length shown along the left-most side of the table, is the total length of the floor joists to be supported on either side of the floor beam divided by two. In the case of our example house, the house is 24 feet wide so the house will require a total width of 24 feet of joists. Dividing by two gives us 12 feet of supported length. So we'll read along the table row for 12 feet of supported length.

How to determine supported length of a beam?

Next use the buttons to select the supported length for the beam. (Recall from our discussion above that the supported length for the beam is the length of the floor joists that it will be supporting on either side of the beam divided by two. For example, for a 24 foot wide house with a center floor beam, the total supported length of the floor joist is 24 feet. Then you divide this by two to give a supported length of 12 feet. This is the number you will use for supported length.)

Do you need a structural engineer to calculate beam span?

In general, if you are staying within the limits of your beam span tables and floor joist span tables, you will not need to have beam calculations done by a structural engineer.

How far can a 2x8 span?

In general terms, joists spaced 16 inches on center can span 1.5 times in feet their depth in inches. A 2x8 up to 12 feet; 2x10 to 15 feet and 2x12 to 18 feet. The larger the deck, the larger the joists.

How far apart should joists be on header?

Marking joist locations at 16" on center spacing on the header with a marker.

What is center to center spacing for deck joists?

The layout term for joists is “On Center,” which is the center-to-center measurement from one joist to the next. Most decks use 16" on center spacing for joists. Most decking is not strong enough to support longer spans than 16". Some builders reduce joist spacing to 12" on center to strengthen the deck frame or to increase maximum allowable joist spans.

What is a joist hanger?

Joist hangers are used to attach the ends of joists to the face of a beam or a deck ledger board. If you identify a crown in the board, you should always install it upwards. The crown will eventually settle after completing construction and should stiffen in the proper position after drying.

What is a joist in a deck?

Joists are the repeated structural members that are used to build a deck frame. The minimum size joist to be used in deck construction depends on the number of footings and beams that will be installed.

Can you stretch a string across a composite deck?

This can sometimes cause an uneven surface. That’s why stretching a string across the joist spacing for composite deck boards can help detect spots that may be higher than others. These spots can be addressed with a power hand planer to give you a nicer, smoother surface for the deck of your dreams.

Do you need to install stair stringers on composite decking?

If you are installing composite decking over an existing frame, you may need to install new intermediate joists or stair stringers to meet the installation requirements. Since most composite products aren’t as inflexible as their wood counterparts, they don’t hide imperfections in the framing quite as well.
