The mesovarium is the portion of the broad ligament of the uterus that suspends the ovaries. The ovary is not covered by the mesovarium; rather, it is covered by germinal epithelium

Germinal epithelium

The ovarian surface epithelium, also called the germinal epithelium of Waldeyer, is a layer of simple squamous-to-cuboidal epithelial cells covering the ovary. The term germinal epithelium is a misnomer as it does not give rise to primary follicles.

What is the ovarian surface?

The ovarian surface reflects the stage of the reproductive cycle and may have grossly visible follicles and corpora lutea. In rodents and dogs, several follicles and corpora lutea may develop during each cycle. These structures often protrude from the ovarian surface, thus giving rise to the grape-like appearance of the ovary. In primates, multiple primary follicles develop with each cycle but usually one follicle will be selected to become the preovulatory follicle, resulting in only a few large protrusions from the ovarian surface.

Where are ovaries located in a dog?

In rodents and dogs, which have long and straight uterine horns, the ovaries are located in the caudal portion of the lumbar region posterior to the kidneys. With the short uterine body of primates, the ovaries are located in the pelvic region.
