Who is the single man in "A Single Man"?

What does Charley see himself as?

He sees himself as impeccable, reserved, ironic, resigned, detached. He projects a cool, impenetrable facade. Charley is seen in his way, which may not be hers. His game plan is apparently to complete this day in an orderly way, and then shoot himself, still above reproach.

What is the movie A Single Man about?

T om Ford's A Single Man begins with urgent Hitchcockian strings and an underwater dream sequence showing a naked, toned body drifting and floating – appropriate for a movie about love and loss which all but drowns in its own gorgeousness. At its centre, there is an elegant, nuanced and sophisticated performance from Colin Firth, for whose English reticence the role is tailor-made. However, he finds himself in the midst of what sometimes looks like an indulgent exercise in 1960s period style, glazed with 21st-century good taste, a 100-minute commercial for men's cologne: Bereavement by Dior.

Is A Single Man a restricted film?

It is arguable that in A Single Man George and Charlotte are too restricted to the world of things, too restricted—as Kenny thinks he himself and most people are—to individual perspective; and that the film in which they exist is as restricted. It is also arguable, from another direction, that the film is an allegory of the experience of solitude and connection—that the limits of solitude are shown and the possibility of connection illuminated.

Yet, it must be stated: Tom Ford’s A Single Man is a truly, truly remarkable film, and it can withstand multiple viewings without loss of appeal or intensity. What does George conclude about Jim's death?

After Jim’s death, George concludes that life is not worth living if all that sustains him is his memory of their relationship. Obviously, that’s not positive. But during his conversations with Charlotte, Kenny and his other students, George poses significant questions about how we find meaning in life. Is life tolerable, for instance, if it seems our best days are behind us? How do we cope in the present amid aching emotional pain? How do we face the future when it is so different than we had hoped? The questions are good ones, even if George’s own answers aren’t.
