1. Loneliness

In Nighthawks, Hopper sets four very different figures in his late-night diner. Each one in turn seems to be dealing with their own feelings of loneliness and isolation. The man working behind the bar is physically separated from the customers by the long wooden bar, but he is also evidently the only one at work.

2. Urbanism

Much like the French Impressionists made paintings of figures set in cafes, bars and restaurants in response to the rise in Parisian urbanism, Hopper’s Nighthawks is also a response to the urbanization and development of New York City.

4. Alienation

It is important to note that Hopper painted Nighthawks two years after the outbreak of World War II. This wider context undoubtedly informed its atmosphere. In particular, Hopper deliberately inflects Nighthawks with the uneasy feelings of dislocation that came about across much of society as a result of war.

5. Contemplation

As much as Nighthawks was a response to urbanization and the devastation of war, we can also read this painting as a quiet scene of internal contemplation. Each figure looks down or faces away from us, considering their individual place in the world.

Introduction

Edward Hopper is one of my favourite painters. And I must say that I am myself surprised to say so.

Review

Nighthawks’ central element is a well-illuminated diner located just around the corner of an otherwise deserted and unlit street.

Nighthawks: What is it all about?

Most interpretations I’ve read about this painting revolve around the idea that it represents human isolation. This interpretation gains credibility when we consider that Hopper painted it 1942, when the world was at the heist of the Second World War.

1942 in the U.S.A

In early December 1941, the Japanese military launched a surprise air attack on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, which led the USA to declare war on Japan. A few days after, Hitler, together with Mussolini, declared war on the USA. The USA had officially entered the Second World War.

Nighthawks: An analysis

For the analysis of Nighthawks, I decided to go over the most salient elements in the painting: the man seating alone, the couple, the barman, the lighting/colours, the diner, and the empty street.

Conclusion

Nighthawks brilliantly depicts human loneliness in a place (New York) that, paradoxically, is the most populated city in the US.

Final thoughts

Whether Nighthawks should be interpreted as a work depicting human isolation is open for debate.

What is the nighthawk effect in Hopper's painting?

Nighthawks was probably Hopper's most ambitious essay in capturing the night-time effects of manmade light. For one thing, the diner's plate-glass windows cause far more light to spill out onto the sidewalk and the brownstones on the far side of the street than is true in any of his other paintings. As well, this interior light comes from more than a single lightbulb, with the result that multiple shadows are cast, and some spots are brighter than others as a consequence of being lit from more than one angle. Across the street, the line of shadow caused by the upper edge of the diner window is clearly visible towards the top of the painting. These windows, and the ones below them as well, are partly lit by an unseen streetlight, which projects its own mix of light and shadow. As a final note, the bright interior light causes some of the surfaces within the diner to be reflective. This is clearest in the case of the right-hand edge of the rear window, which reflects a vertical yellow band of interior wall, but fainter reflections can also be made out, in the counter-top, of three of the diner's occupants. None of these reflections would be visible in daylight.

When was Nighthawks painted?

A review of the page on which "Nighthawks" is entered shows (in Edward Hopper's handwriting) that the intended name of the work was actually "Night Hawks", and that the painting was completed on January 21, 1942.

What is the line of shadow in the painting?

Within months of its completion, it was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for $3,000, and has remained there ever since.

Who inspired Hopper?

Who was Edward Hopper's wife?

Starting shortly after their marriage in 1924, Edward Hopper and his wife, Josephine (Jo), kept a journal in which he would, using a pencil, make a sketch-drawing of each of his paintings, along with a precise description of certain technical details.

Did Café Terrace at Night influence Nighthawks?

Beyond this, there is no evidence that Café Terrace at Night exercised an influence on Nighthawks. Although there is no evidence at all (other than the fact that Hopper admired the story), Levin also suggests that he may have been inspired by Ernest Hemingway 's 1927 short story, The Killers .

About the painting

It has been suggested that Hopper was inspired by a short story of Ernest Hemingway 's, either "The Killers" (1927), which Hopper greatly admired, [5] or from the more philosophical "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" (1933).

Location of the restaurant

The scene was supposedly inspired by a diner (since demolished) in Greenwich Village, Hopper's neighborhood in Manhattan. Hopper himself said the painting "was suggested by a restaurant on Greenwich Avenue where two streets meet". Additionally, he noted that "I simplified the scene a great deal and made the restaurant bigger". [11]

In popular culture

Roger Brown 's Puerto Rican Wedding (1969). Brown said the café in the lower left corner of this painting "isn't set up like an imitation of Nighthawks, but still refers to it very much." [15]

How does Hopper use perspective in Nighthawks?

Hopper used perspective in setting the scene for Nighthawks, at an angled street corner allowing him to show the subjects from various angles, while also displaying the street scene. It gives the viewer the feeling of looking in on something. It also lets the viewer wonder what the man looks like, with his back to the viewer, creating intrigue.
