Bruiser is a book that is about a teenager named Brewster Rawlins who has a gift that makes him take away the pain from the people he cares about. In the story Brewster meets two teens named Tennyson and Bronte Sternberger who end up finding out about his gift and the consiquences that come along with being friends with Brewster.
The Story
The story begins with Tennyson Sternberger, whose family is in flux. Tennyson's parents are struggling after an affair. Though they are still together, they argue constantly and neglect their parenting duties. This leaves Tennyson and his twin sister, Brontë, laboring to cope with the dysfunction in what was once a solid family life.
Critical Evaluation
Shusterman uses a unique first-person narrator format for this novel. Though this point of view is commonly used in young adult literature, Shusterman changes readers' expectations by rotating through characters to tell the story from a variety of first-person perspectives.
