How many base coats for 500 sq ft?
Typically, you’ll need 2 basecoats and 1 topcoat. This means that for a 500 sq ft area, you would need 2 US gal (7.6 L) of Waterlox Original Sealer/Finish and 1 US gal (3.8 L) of whatever topcoat you choose. You may need more coats for very porous, untreated, or recently sanded wood surfaces.
How to ventilate waterlox?
If you are unable to ventilate the area properly, you should not use this product. Cross-ventilation is best to aerate the room and to help the finish dry. For best results, place a box fan in a window or door with another window or door open on the opposite side of the room. You should ventilate the room while you are applying the finish and while it is drying between coats.
How to sand wood with 220 grit sandpaper?

Why is my coat drying so fast?
Moving onto the next coat too quickly could cause air bubbles on the surface of the finish, or a sticky, filmy result. If your area has high humidity, cold temperatures, or is poorly ventilated, this may increase the time required for drying between coats.

My one issue with Waterlox
The only thing that does bother me a little about Waterlox is “ambering”. Over time, the color of the countertops has changed. In this photo, a piece of the original butcher block is laid on top of our Waterloxed countertop. There’s a screaming difference here and I’m not nuts about it.
So: would I use Waterlox on butcher block again?
Yes, I would. I imagine if you are maintaining a stone countertop like granite correctly you are about as fussy as we are about our counters. And the maintenance is probably about the same.

Is linseed oil a water spot?
Linseed oil molecules are also larger than Tung oil and will therefore have limited penetrating ability. Because of this it requires frequent and time-consuming reapplication, will water spot and is usually not recommended for working surfaces such as floors or counter tops or for use in water-sensitive areas.

What finish can you put over shellac?
For example, you can use an oil-based polyurethane if you look at soft the satin sheen that oil-based polyurethane can give. The great thing about wood finishes is that there are so many options available, so you have a lot of freedom when it comes to deciding how you want your finish to look.
Can you seal over shellac?
Yes, you can seal over shellac. However, the wood will react with the finish and you need to add a retarder when using a water based finish such as wiping varnish. Shellac also needs to be rubbed out really well before you apply any finish so no streaks appear.
Can you spray lacquer over shellac?
Yes, you can spray lacquer over shellac. You can spray lacquer over shellac – it’ll take substantially more coats than if you apply shellac directly to wood, but it will work. The trick is to use as little as possible as you want as thin a layer as you can get with the lacquer so it really soaks into the wood and adheres well. Personally, if I’m doing an MDF project I’d just use shellac and not bother with the lacquer.
