The plastic best suited for storing acetone is Teflon ® (FEP, TFE, and PFA).May 22, 2003

Can you use acetone on plastic?

However, some plastics can withstand the corrosiveness of the chemical. Although that does not make it okay to use acetone for cleaning purposes on any plastic material either. The acetone chemical can directly dissolve the plastic product, discoloring of the product should be of less concern to us.

What is the best container to store acetone in?

Q. Which container is best for storing and for dispensing acetone? A. Acetone is an extremely flammable liquid and vapor. The vapor is heavier than air and may spread long distances, making distant ignition and flashback possible. The plastic best suited for storing acetone is Teflon ® (FEP, TFE, and PFA).

What type of plastic offers the best resistance to chemicals?

What type of plastic offers the best resistance to various chemicals? Polypropylene is almost as resistant as polyethylene, but with a few specific chemicals it offers superior resistance. It can also be autoclaved and is better for use in higher temperature situations.

Is polystyrene soluble in acetone?

Some (e.g. polystyrene) are soluble in acetone, some (e.g., polypropylene, polyethylene) are not. Does acetone melt plastic?

What type of plastic can hold acetone?

Plastic normally does not have the consistency that can stop the acetone from damaging it. However, other different types of plastics can hold and contain acetone normally. The types of plastics that are not affected by containing acetone are mentioned below.

What does acetone do to plastic?

Acetone has a corrosive nature; it can be found in nature too. However, even in nature, this material can be harmful to other materials.

Will acetone melt abs plastic?

ABS stands for Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, which is a common thermoplastic polymer. One of the most common items that are made from this material is known as LEGO. If acetone comes in contact with ABS plastic, then the surface of the ABS will become dull.

Does acetone clean plastic?

Acetone has properties of cleaning. It is considered a solvent and thus it can dissolve organic elements. Things like paint, glue, and grease can be easily cleaned with this chemical. Even nail polish cleaner has acetone in it.

As said Polystyrene is a good choice. I was also thinking about acrylics (perspex/PMMA) as acetone is effective in dissolving superglue which is chemically similar. Looking at the table in the link below it seems I was right but I don't have direct experience of this.

What plastics dissolve in acetone?

Two kinds of plastic that do dissolve in acetone are PVC and polystyrene. At least in the case of polystyrene, however, this is not so much a clean dissolution as the formation of an amorphous goo (likely the case for PVC as well). For practical purposes, though, you could say it dissolved those plastics.

Which polymer has a less capability to tolerate solvents like acetone?

Amorphous polymers, usually have a less capability to tolerate solvents like acetone.

What solvent dissolves non-polar plastic?

To put it simply, polar (“water- based”) solvents dissolve polar (“water-soluble”) substances, and non-polar (“non-water-based”) solvents dissolve non-polar (“water-insoluble”) substances. Here, most plastics are non-polar, and therefore, you should be looking for a non-polar solvent to dissolve your plastic.

What is CPVC used for?

And you have also a polymer like CPVC, or chlorinated PVC, that are used in piping, in chemical industry and other places where you need chemical resistance. It is usually a combination of cost, temperature, and mechanical stress involved. Other criteria might also matter, like medical approval, might matter.

Can acetone dissolve plastic?

Yes.. There are all kinds of plastics. If a particular plastic bears a close enough similarity to acetone, the acetone will dissolve or at least affect its surface, softening, smearing or even dissolving the plastic. Other plastics, dissimilar to acetone, will remain unaffected by the solvent. Thanku..

Can you store nail polish remover in plastic bottles?

No. Nail polish remover is stored in plastic bottles. We use acetone to rince lab glassware, but caution, not kitchen glassware. Acetone might seem like a strong acid to the naked eye, but it's not. Otherwise, it would eat away the plastic.

Can polysulphones be attacked?

Some might be able to do so anyway, like Polysulphone and some others. They can still be attacked, is the part molded have high built in stress after the molding pr. If a chemical will attack and harm the surface of a polymer, have many causes. It is not only the polymer itself, but other factors also involved.

What happens when plastic is not compatible with a chemical?

When a plastic and a chemical are not compatible, the chemical essentially attacks the plastic in a reaction that causes the polymer structure to break down. This occurs at a molecular level and causes the chains that bind the structure together to weaken, become more susceptible to impact and even fail. Part failure can be disastrous for any facility, so be sure to only choose plastics that are up for the job and monitor parts as instructed to ensure they get replaced or repaired when needed.

What are the factors that affect plastic compatibility?

Factors Accounted for in Chemical Compatibility Charts. While chemical attack, environmental stress cracking and physical absorption are all serious and important factors covered by a chemical compatibility chart, plastics can be affected by a variety of other factors as well.

How to maintain plastic parts?

As such, it's important to maintain plastic parts by wiping away any spills and splatters that may occur. If fluids and chemicals will be sitting inside of a plastic tank or another part for extended periods of time, you should always "over-engineer," or choose a plastic that can more than handle your specifications.

What is the chemical resistance chart for plastics?

Chemical Resistance Chart for Plastics. One of the most important resources for determining which plastic should be used in a chemical environment is a chemical resistance chart for plastics. These charts show how compatible different plastics are with a variety of chemicals and other fluids that fall on all points of the pH scale, ...

Can plastic stand up to chemicals?

A chemical in its pure form is very different from one that's been watered down. As such, it's crucial that you choose a plastic that can stand up to a chemical at whatever concentration specification you require. In some chemical compatibility charts, multiple entries will be shown detailing how well a polymer resists chemicals at different concentrations. If this is not the case, it would be best to consult with your parts supplier about what a specific plastic can handle.

Does chemical damage affect the physical structure of plastic?

However, it does seriously affect the physical structure of the plastic part. When chemicals are absorbed into the plastic, it can make the part go soft or brittle, fluctuate in weight and even change in dimension.
