One might be thermostatic or the control valve may have been changed for leakage or stiffness leaving the original lock shield ones in place. The picture will help.

i was just wondering since the new radiator is 50mm shorter than the old one, i was going to use adjustable tails on the radiator. Is there a male coupling which is 3/4 to 1/2

They are from when the house was built 40 years ago. Its microbore and all rads/valves are original and all have 1/2 on one side and 3/4 valve on other side ?

I doubt it my guess is one is a 15mm compression connection very common now and one is ground in union connection.
