With a standard showerhead, around half a gallon more water will emerge each minute, so a 10-minute shower would use somewhere close to 25 gallons.
What is the most common size of hot water cylinder?
The most common size of combination cylinder has 115 litres of hot water storage and 20 litres of cold water storage. This type of cylinder is ideal for premises where a cold water storage tank cannot be fitted due to space restriction such as a flat.
Where do you put an unvented cylinder?
An unvented cylinder can be installed anywhere in the home, whereas a vented cylinder needs to be located beneath the cold water tank in the attic. Unvented cylinders are often quieter as there is not gurgling due to the water tank being refilled slowly.
What size water cylinder Do I need UK?
When selecting the size of the hot water cylinder, a simple rule of thumb is that for a typical domestic household, you should allow between 35 and 45 litres for every occupant. That said a mains pressure system can use about 18 litres of water per minute at 40 degrees Celsius if a decent quality shower head is used.
How many kW should a hot water cylinder have?
An 8 kW HP system could use the 10 to 15+ kW range. Less than 8 kW HP system should consider the larger cylinder sizes related to 3 to 6 kW range. The above formula ignores cylinder heat losses due to short reheat times. A bath is taken as 100 l water at 40 °C or 60 l water at 40 °C blended with 40 l cold water.
How long does an unvented cylinder take to heat up?
As a general rule of thumb most cylinders can achieve a reheat time of around 20 minutes (laboratory) , adjusted recovery to accommodate the variables of 'real life' in a typical house after say a bath fill, tends to be around 25 to 30 minutes, consequently if two baths are wanted in succession the cylinder must be ...

I run a guest house with 7 room, (up to 16 people) which has 2 baths and 5 showers and 7 basins. We also run the kitchen sink from the DHW supply, one commercial dishwasher and two commercial washing machies from the DHW supply. Currently we have a 36KW boiler and a traditional gravity fed system with a 166 litre tank.

In guest houses and the like, it's very important to ensure you can never run out of hot water or your guests will be very unhappy and you'll end up with a bad reputation. I'd be inclined to put in two 300L cylinders connected in parallel, and upgrade your boiler as well, as the cylinder coils could take up to 52kw for the best reheat times.
DerAlteFritz
If we are talking about upgrading the boiler then we must add a further three rooms and 7 people which are currently serviced on a separate zone with its own Ariston 210 litre unvented cylinder.

SIze - you have to work out the maximum possible requirement that you're prepared to allow for, simple litres per minute stuff.

I dont understand why you think that the storage requirement would be lessened by using a thermal store!
DerAlteFritz
I know very little about thermal stores except the principle so I thought it was worth asking if I could save some space.
Agile
You seem to have very little understanding about the options available. For example you mention floor mounted boilers. There are very few models available any no obvious reason why anyone would want one instead of the normal wall boilers.
Why are unvented water cylinders common?
Unvented cylinders became common in properties from the 1980s due to their space saving and improved water pressure benefits.
Why does Getting the Correct Size Water Cylinder Tank Matter?
It is important to install a water cylinder tank that is the most suitable size for the property and household habitants needs otherwise there can be problems .
How to tell if hot water cylinder is bad?
Water discolouration – Another sign of an issue with a hot water cylinder is when the water discolours. Discoloured water can be the result of the anode rode from inside a hot water cylinder requiring replacing or the tank itself may have started to deteriorate or corrode and therefore a professional heating engineer should be called to investigate.
What is a hot water cylinder?
A hot water cylinder is an insulated storage tank used within certain types of heating systems to store hot water for later use . There is a range of benefits of having a hot water cylinder within the heating system, including the ability to supply a range of water outlets without losing pressure or to have a reserve tank of hot water should the boiler itself fail. Due to the fact that the tank is insulated, the water should stay hot for a period of time should there be a power cut for example.
Do you factor water usage before deciding on cylinder size?
In addition to the suggested generalised tank sizes above, the homeowner or landlord should also factor the household’s actual water usage before finalising the water cylinder tank size needed.
Can you replace a hot water cylinder like for like?
Replacing like for like – Often the advice if replacing a current hot water cylinder is to purchase the same type of tank for the new system to save from changing any pipework or the location of the tank. However, should the household requirements have changed, for example, it is highly recommended that the advice of a professional heating engineer is sought to help plan any significant system changes.
Why is it better to have a bigger cylinder as the same volume?
beside each other gives an extra top and extra bottom surface area. So a larger cylinder as same volume has better ratio and so less losses.
Why avoid bubble top cylinders?
I would avoid 'bubble top' cylinders (like Megaflo and some OSOs) because they need periodic air gap replenishment.

What size unvented cylinder do I need?
There are a few different decisions to make when having an unvented cylinder installed and we are here to help you make the correct ones. First of all, there is the size of cylinder required. If you chose one that is too small, you won’t have sufficient hot water for your household’s needs.
What are the two types of unvented cylinders?
There are two different types of unvented cylinders, direct and indirect. This refers to the way they are heated.
What properties are unvented cylinders suitable for?
Unvented cylinders are suitable for a variety of domestic and commercial properties. As mentioned in the previous section, unvented cylinders are perfect for a larger home. They can provide huge amounts of hot water at 60° all year round, which is something a combi boiler could never do. Most combi boilers only give a 35°-45° temperature rise. So in winter, when the water is colder there can be a noticeable difference. Als, because of the pressure they can provide, hot water can be drawn from multiple outlets at the same time. Without a noticeable drop in flow rate. With extremely larger houses, a hot water circuit can even be installed. This circuit pumps hot water round the house at peak times, meaning there is a much shorter wait time for hot water.
How does an unvented water cylinder save energy?
Meaning, the boiler or immersion heating the cylinder has to work a lot less to keep it hot. This helps save money on energy bills.
Why use an unvented shower cylinder?
Unvented cylinders provide very good hot water flow rates, suitable for properties with large hot water demand. Allowing multiple showers and baths to be run at the same time. Also, with the water being stored at 60° they provide hotter water than a combi boiler could. Moreover, because of the additional pressure, unvented cylinders can provide much more powerful showers than their gravity-fed counterparts. This eliminates the need for any shower pumps that may have been installed to increase the pressure. Most shower pumps are extremely noisy, so most people are happy to get rid of them.
How long do unvented water tanks last?
The lack of a cold water tank saves space in properties and makes them easier to maintain. Typically made from stainless steel, they are more than capable of coping with the high temperatures and extreme pressure. Unvented cylinders last for a very long time and generally come with a 25-year warranty.
Why are unvented cylinders called unvented cylinders?
Due to unvented cylinders being fed directly from the mains, they can provide and maintain a very high flow rate. Provided there is an adequate flow rate coming into the property. Unvented cylinders don’t need to be vented into a feed and expansion tank, unlike gravity fed hot water cylinders. Hence the name – unvented cylinder.
Why do hotels use unvented cylinders?
Hotels, leisure centres and salons have also started switching to unvented cylinders in recent years because of the amount of hot water they can provide . In hotels, you can find plant rooms full of large unvented cylinders installed together to provide enough hot water for the entire building.
