What Are the Best Homeschool Programs?
The best homeschool program, much like the best homeschool philosophy , is the one that works best for you and your family. There are not only different philosophies to consider within homeschooling, there are also many different curriculum choices for core subjects such as math, Language Arts, and history. Narrowing down a homeschool philosophy (or two) that you think may work for your children is a good place to begin.
What Is Unschooling Homeschooling?
A shift in traditional schooling and homeschooling, this philosophy takes a child-led approach to learning, relying on students to choose their own interests and what they would like to study. What Is the Best Homeschooling Method?
To answer this question, it may be best to ask, what works best for your family, for your children, and for you? There are as many homeschool curriculum options as there are types of homeschool moms. You can find complete homeschool curriculum packages, piece together unit studies to suit your family’s interests, or find online programs that engage your student in virtual classroom learning. There is simply no top homeschool curriculum. What is best is what works best for your student. The beauty of learning at home is that it allows you to choose.
How Much Does It Cost to Homeschool Your Child?
Homeschool costs vary as much as families do! Whether you choose to purchase homeschool curriculum packages, track down resources from your local library, unschool your child, or enroll your child in an online homeschool program, costs can range to hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year, per child .
Is Sonlight a good homeschooling program?
Sonlight is a great example. Ask a Sonlight family to describe their homeschool style and many times they may simply say, we use Sonlight! With classical and Charlotte Mason influences and a complete Instructor’s Guide, it’s tough to fit Sonlight into a particular homeschool philosophy. The beauty of homeschooling is choosing what works best for you and your family.
Why Literature Based?
My core value that led me to a literature based curriculum is simple; I want my kids to love to read. As a child, looking back, I think I suffered from decoding issues. Reading was panic inducing. I never passed a spelling test well into adulthood. With time and practice my mind did settle in. Reading is a joy, but books weren’t always a friend.
Why Not Keep On Reading? Why Buy a Curriculum at All?
Organization is not my strong suit. A huge success factor in homeschooling is being honest with yourself and knowing your own weaknesses. If I were to “plan” the school year like some of the amazingly creative moms I know, school would end with the falling of the last leaf. I crave a check off list.
Literature Based Curriculum and The Big Family
When we started officially started school our oldest son was six. We made the three oldest kids (6, 5 and almost 4) a “Class” of their own. The little babies would soon become the next “Class.” Sonlight has an H/B/L (History, Bible, Literature) for each year, Pre-K to college prep.
From Theory to Success Story
In the begining this was all just a theory. Fifteen years later, we can see the results. My three grads love books. They are succeeding in college and I enjoy them, a lot. Each of them have a unique #sonlightstory and I would like to share about how we used Sonlight differently for each of them.

What is Sonlight's IG?
Sonlight's main resource, after all the incredible books, is the Instructor's Guide, or IG, as moms like to call it. The Sonlight team strategically interweaves a collection of History, Readers and Read-Alouds into your IG. Your Instructor's Guide helps you decide how much is enough but not too much each day, and breaks those learning elements down into a daily schedule for you. Thought-provoking notes in your IG spark discussion with your children and balance any biased statements you may find in the literature. Vocabulary words, extra historical tidbits, and map and timeline activities help solidify what your family is learning. You find everything you need to use Sonlight's books and materials within your IG, so you can open it up and teach confidently with minimal prep time. If you'd like to reserve a day in your schedule for field trips, extra learning activities, swim team or ballet, Sonlight's flexible 4-or 5-day version of the daily schedule helps you simplify your plan to accommodate your family.
