Although it gives a pretty good depiction of small town life in Georgia, it says nothing about racial inequities which of course still remained after the Civil War. The whites certainly don’t see their black servants as their equals but they are not cruel. White Trash on the other hand are looked down upon, and many of the new inventions of that era are interwoven into the plot – cars, telephones, house plumbing and electricity. But it is all so cute.

Cold Sassy Treeis the kind of gentle yet powerful story that works perfectly for television. Done today, it might be turned into a longer, eight episode series on cable but one has no complaints for how it was done originally. With fine unobtrusive direction from Joan Tewkesbury, who also adapted the teleplay, and an intimate, personal feel, Cold Sassy Treemight even qualify as the oft touted, rarely seen "kind of a movie they just don't make any more." Only they did make it and they even managed to include an entire song belted out by Faye Dunaway while boisterously playing the piano. That alone may be reason enough to give it a look but the story and the actors are the reason to stay.

Olive Ann Burns was born in Banks County, Georgia. Her father was a farmer but was forced to sell his farm in 1931 during the Great Depression. The Burns family then moved to Commerce, Georgia. Burns attended Mercer University, where she wrote for the college magazine.
Career
Burns worked for the Atlanta Journal and wrote under the pseudonym "Amy Larkin". She married Andy Sparks, a fellow journalist. In 1971 Burns began writing down family stories as dictated by her parents. In 1975 she was diagnosed with lymphoma and began to change the family stories into a novel that would later become Cold Sassy Tree.
