Marjorie and Gordon had known each other since childhood, as she had grown up across the street from the Hinckleys in Salt Lake City. After returning to East Millcreek at the end of employment with the railroad, Hinckley was called as a counselor in the presidency of the church's East Millcreek Stake. He later served as president of that stake, until about six months after his call as an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
