I am a newbie to this forum but not to square foot gardening. I started two years ago with a 4 x 4 foot frame and built it 8 inchs deep (probably not enough). I bought all the ingredients for Mels Mix locally and the cost was about $40 for about 10 cu ft of mix. My tomatoes grew great, but beans and peas (southern) not so good.

Yes, Mels mix is more expensive than other options. But I'm glad I did it. My soil is exceptional and will be for a decade or longer as long as I add a bit of compost each time I replant.
