Width
To make the most of a pleasant view and flood a room with as much sunlight as possible, mount drapery hardware well outside of or beyond the molding. Your drapes, when stacked back or open, still take up some room. Preferably, the stacked fabric shouldn’t hide any of the view or block natural light.
Height
Once you have determined how wide to place your drapery, figure out how high to mount the rod. This is an easy task. Hang them just below the ceiling leaving 1 or 2 inches above the drapes so the window treatment won’t appear tight or crowded.
Corner Windows and Sliding Doors
Even when you’re dealing with a corner window that sits tight against one wall, do not install the rod on the wide molding. Mount the hardware almost to ceiling height and far enough past the window on the side opposite the corner to stack back the drapes and expose the window’s entire surface.
Hiding Molding
If the ample molding isn’t as pretty as you’d like, add a matching valance to top the fabric panels and conceal the upper trim. Drapes with a valance might not extend to the ceiling due to the topper’s length, but by properly hanging them, you'll maximize the flow of natural lighting, reveal the view and create a nicely finished window treatment.
Showcasing Molding
When you have wide, ornate crown molding, it’s a shame to cover it with fabric. Leave the beautiful trimwork on display by using an inside mount for the drapes. You install inside mounts with brackets placed high inside of the window's frame, similar to the way a shower curtain’s tension rod mounts.
